Rio is a big, busy city. Since we arrived at Carnaval, the city was teeming with people and traffic. This really impeded our tours, as streets would open and close without notice. We went to the Christ to Redeemer statue and Sugar Loaf. Both were extremely crowded and day was very hot. However, the views were spectacular. Never got to see the beaches as the roads were closed. We were advised to stay on the main streets to avoid pickpockets.
Be prepared to see what appears to be a mirage! You are cruising down a big muddy river an all of a sudden a big city appears. Quite mind boggling to be sure. Lots of history here. Take a river cruise and go off to visit the marshes, caimans and wildlife. We were out all day and ate on a floating restaurant. The theater tour is good but too short. Definitely some streets to stay off of.
