We usually go to the beach in St. Thomas but this time we shopped for jewelry downtown. On the past couple of cruises we've been docked at the new cruiseport, but this time we were back at Havensight, which I prefer. It's been expanded a lot since our last dockage there. Many of the shops are the same as downtown, but downtown has its own special charm. We walked, and the walk was quite doable, even though it looks like a long way.
This is a wonderful island, whether you shop, beach or tour. And if you haven't been to St. John, that is a must. Take a cab to Redhook and then the ferry to St. John. A short ride up the coast and you're at Trunk Bay, with its snorkel trail and beautiful unspoiled beach.
Found these guys at the cruiseport. They offered us 2 hours and 2 places of snorkeling for $35. We went with another couple from the ship. Waited 40 minutes for them to get more people, then they took the 4 of us out. We picked up another couple at a marina down the way, so there were 6 total on the boat. It was a beautiful day, the water was warm, the fish were beautiful and we drank all the beer. Great excursion, especially for the money.
Nice once you get on land. The tendering is a pain. We've been here a lot, so we decided to try walking to 7 mile beach. It's a long way to get to a place with a public beach, but we found one. It wasn't large and it wasn't particularly nice. We didn't even get wet, just sunbathed a while.
Walked back to town, shopped a bit but didn't buy anything. Tendered back to the ship. Uneventful day, but we got our exercise.
New RCL cruiseport. We don't care much for Jamaica from previous experience, so we just walked around the designated area, looked at some jewelry (to compare it to what we bought in St. Thomas and reinforce our purchase) and got back on the ship. They are still building the cruiseport so maybe it will have more to offer in a couple of years. As it was, pretty boring. You have to take a shore excursion if you want to see the island, and, though we usually book our excursions privately, on this island I would recommend going with the overpriced ship's excursions for safety reasons.
