Cocoa Beach Rating: 5.0 out of 5+
We took the shuttle into Cocoa Beach. Comfortable, air-conditioned coach. About a 20 minute ride. They dropped us off near the Ron Jon Surf Shop. A very short walk to the beach, or to the public restroom facilities. There is also a CVS pharmacy, a Walgreens, and a 7-11 all within walking distance. There is an option to take another shuttle over to Cocoa Village, which we had done on a previous cruise; however even though Cocoa Village is pretty, we just didn't find much to do there. So, this time we spent a very relaxing few hours lazing on the beach in rented beach chairs, reading, strolling along the surf, and generally enjoying the scene. We also had a bit of excitement when what turned out to be a secret US Air Force unmanned spacecraft was launched from Cape Canaveral, causing a loud roar and a dramatic trail of smoke high in the sky.

We liked that the shuttle ran to and from the cruise terminal every 30 minutes, so it was very convenient to leave when you felt like it.

Overall, we feel that this inexpensive excursion is a great alternative to a more expensive and/or planned activity.

Forts & Pirates Rating: 4.0 out of 5+
We did the Historical sights tour but without the Pirate museum. Overall, we enjoyed this look at the island. Our driver took us through all parts of the island, from very impoverished areas, to the swanky, upscale resort area, as well as pointing out the cemetery where Anna Nicole Smith is interred. We also toured both Fort Charlotte and Fort Fincastle. The van itself was not very comfortable but it was still worth it to see what there is to see in New Providence.

The tour was about 2.5 hours and we had some time before having to be back on-board, so we took a water taxi over to Paradise Island. The views were wonderful; however, having a bad knee, I had trouble getting off the water taxi, as it was a few feet lower than the dock and made for a very bumpy, unsteady jump as the boat was still moving. I was helped up, but it was scary. Also, there was a guy who had jumped on the water taxi at the last minute in Nassau and gave the passengers an unsolicited 'guided' tour and then guilt-ed the passengers into tipping him. A lot of this goes on of course, but it's awkward.

We didn't go into Atlantis, but we did walk around the adjacent Marina Village, which is a lovely upscale shopping area. It has a very Disneyfied feel as a lot of new development does, but we enjoyed a stroll, a look at some private yachts, and picked up some Tortuga Rum Cakes to bring home. Nice, clean public restrooms also. Rather than go through the ordeal with the water taxi, we found a taxi-van going back to the ship terminal (waiting in front of the Comfort Suites), and we enjoyed that ride very much - it was comfortable and inexpensive. A former DJ, the driver was charming and chatty, and all the passengers got to enjoy his awesome taste in music (classic rock).
