Costa Maya
Beach Break Rating:
We booked the Boat Blast and Beach Break through NCL. The excursion began with a 40 minute bus ride, and then we were given a safety briefing prior to piloting our two-man boats. The excursion guides led us through the waters in a line, zigzagging and splashing and having a great time. We then had about 40 minutes to snorkel. That part of the excursion was average. Finally, we returned to the shore through a circuitous route and enjoyed a few hours of a national open bar. Unfortunately, it rained, but fortunately it was so warm the only reason we cared is because our chips got soggy. We felt it was worth the price we paid for the day.

Belize City
Port Rating:
We did not book an excursion in Belize which was a mistake. Belize City is poverty ridden and dirty. People in the streets accost you with offers of tours and cab rides. It was very unpleasant. I have no intentions of ever returning.

Roatan
Port Rating: Not Rated
After our bad day in Belize, we decided to book an excursion in Roatan, so we had our concierge book us with the Island Sightseeing and Beach, which was a reasonable cost. A small bus took us up on a hill where we could see the ship docked at the pier, very beautiful. We then went to an iguana farm where we could feed the iguana...tons of fun. They also had some parrots, monkeys and fish in a small bay. After that we dropped by a private home perched high on the ridge of Roatan, where we could see both sides of the island, including the reef. The views were stunning. Finally, we went to Parrot Bay where we had about an hour and a half to lie in the sun, drink a beer, and just relax. Snorkeling equipment was available, but you could actually just walk around in the water and see the fish. Beach beds were also available for rent ($3) and locals were offering massages on the beach. We chose to relax in the metal beach chairs, which was fine.
After the excursion, we had time to walk to a local restaurant, Modah's, where we were served a delicious island meal of red snapper and shrimp. Modah also treated us to a taste of iguana, which was fun. The place looked like a shack, but was recommended by our tour guide, and was wonderful. Lunch for two, including beer, was worth twice what we paid for it.

Cozumel
Culinary Tour Rating:
In Cozumel we booked the Mexican Cuisine and tasting through NCL. Although we had to wait quite a while before we were picked up, the excursion was great. We went to Playa Mia where our chef, Oscar, talked us through the creation of a delicious Mexican fish lunch. During the class we were treated to Oscar's humor as well as Mexican beer. (Other drinks were also available.) Once we were finished cooking, we were escorted to a dining room overlooking the ocean where we enjoyed our lunch with more beer or wine. After that we were given free time at Playa Mia, but we had so little time left that we didn't get to enjoy more than a quick walk on the pier and a Margarita.
After the excursion we had time to walk through the shops of Cozumel, where the typical Mexican offerings (hats, dolls, purses, etc.) were available.
