We spent a couple of days in Rome before the pre-cruise excursions. It is a lot of walking and around every corner another surprise. We had great meals, shopped, saw the Jewish Quarter and Spanish steps. Really an amazing combination of the ancient and modern city of Rome. The excursion took us to the colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and lots more. The second day was the Vatican Museums, St. Peter's Basilica, St. Peter's Square and the Sistine Chapel. There is unique pizza and gelato on every corner. Some of our best advice was to avoid the gelato that is brightly colored because it is just colored with food coloring. It was good advice.
We went with a small group on a driving and walking tour. Museums, churches, fountains and shopping all really enjoyable. We wished we had booked a trip to Pisa as it would have completed the trip but really not enough time.
The port is so close to the city which is very easy to navigate. Recommend taking a double decker bus for an overview and then going back to the places you want to see closer up. Shopping was a lot of fun and we enjoyed stopping at a local restaurant for Tapas. We enjoyed this port so much we will plan another trip to spend longer. It also had an amazing outdoor food market with foods we had never seen before.
Since we visited in December there was a local Christmas market which a lot of fun. Tons of local shops to visit but wouldn't want to spend a week there.
