San Juan

The ship docked at 3:30 pm, and getting off the ship was a mess. Long lines, and many trying to cut in line to get off the ship quicker. We jogged to the El Morro fort and explored. After that we toured the nearby area. It got dark soon after. We would have liked to walk around the Old Town in daylight to see more of the multi colored buildings, but time was not on our side. Next time in San Juan will be during daylight hours.

We took a cab to Sapphire Beach. The beach was beautiful, but the snorkeling off the shore was not as good as others promoted. A local said that the water was very choppy. There was a resort here that we would consider spending a week at. We also went to the dockside Senor Frog's. We thought it would be unenjoyably cheesy, but we had a fun time there.

We took a morning jog off the boat as soon as it docked. We ran from the port, through Philipsburg, to nearly the end of Great Bay. We were planning on going to Maho Bay to watch the airplanes, but we liked what we saw in Great Bay and decided to spend the day there. We went back and were accosted by aggressive renters of beach chairs. We decided to get our chairs from the first person that was not in our face. We ended up going to a beach bar/restaurant called Captain Jack's. We had amazing dishes of jerked chicken and ribs. We decided to get chairs from them and they threw in a couple bonus drinks as well. We had a lovely day at Great Bay. My suggestion would be to rinse very well before drying, because the sand there is very hard to get off once it has dried to your skin.

We walked of the ship and explored beyond the port into the capital, Basseterre. Apart from an interesting church, there is not much of note in the downtown area, which felt run down. The locals mostly went about their daily routine, which was a refreshing difference from some tourist areas where one must fend off incessant pitches. Westward, and up a hill, lies Palms Court Gardens, which is a house with a pleasant garden and pool area. Many tours go there, but it is reachable by foot.
The next time I find myself in St Kitts, I think I will take a catamaran to Nevis.
