Great port to just walk around and shop. You can actually take a city bus to the California lighthouse for around 1 dollar you will have to walk up the hill though. Great way to work off those cruise calories.
Another great place to just walk around and take pictures. Beautiful place to take pictures. Watch where you shop though look for deals never just buy at the first place. Found Blue Curacao and then walked down the street to find it 10 dollars cheaper for the same stuff. Very safe port.
Great port. Our first time to South America. Felt pretty safe here. You do not want to walk through the port to the city because its all industry and looked pretty unsafe. We actually took a government run tour here. Its on the bus's marked Turismo. For 20 a person we took a 3 hour tour of old walled city (had 1 hour here). The driver found us all when it was time to go. We also got a tour through a working emerald factory and museum. My wife one 2 raw emeralds here as well plus we got a tour of the new city here as well with a little time to shop. Great deal at a third of the price of a ships excursion.
This place is kinda scary, lots of pickpockets (small ones) in the neighboring park so be aware. There is a church in walking distance. Watch for cars here they do not stop. Great little souvenir shop just off the ship as well. On the right hand side of the park which is just outside of the port flea market there is some great pics of the sea here. Plus going right on the side of the park there is a huge church well worth taking a look at. I would not venture any further off the beaten path though unless you are on an excursion.
