Costa Maya

Made one lap around the retail mall as soon as we got off the ship, then grabbed a cab and went into town. Landscape of the island reminded me of Pacific islands after battles during World War II......looked battered, buildings in ruins. Then we discovered the island is still recovering from a hurricane in 2007. Just pretty bad.

Pleasant little beachfront boardwalk area with lots of food/drink establishments and beach-side recreation vendors....not to mention a gazillion "independent vendors" selling just about anything imaginable. Had an excellent dinner and drinks and headed back to the ship. Glad we were able to make a contribution to their economy. Bless their hearts, they need the help! But not a very pleasant stop....probably won't go back!

Again moved as quickly as possible through the port retail mall, and headed into town on foot. A local "guide" attached himself to us, which turned into one of the luckiest catches for us. He was pleasant, full of information, and took delight in telling us all about his island and city, and its history. Took us to a dockside restaurant (Bird's Isle) where we enjoyed delicious food and beverages. While we ate, he grabbed a cab for our ride back to the ship! Excellent port.

Following our usual port plan....scooted off the ship, quickly browsed the port retail mall, then headed into town. Picked up three "guides" this time who showered us with more information than we will ever be able to digest about Roatan. But, they were delightful....helped us find another dockside pub, where we again enjoyed local food and drink (was that really fried Iquana). We really enjoyed getting out and seeing the "real-deal" city-side of Roatan. Wish we had rented a car....the island is small enough to have permitted some serious sightseeing....and is generally safe.

Ah, man......Destin on steroids! Browsed our way through the massive port retail area, then wound up winding our way down the street through the retail area of Cozumel! Since the scenery wasn't likely to change very quickly on foot, we found a little hole-in-the-wall watering hole, and sampled a couple "american-style" appetizers and local beverages. Then set out to find Margaritaville! Had just the best time there....and, as Forrest Gump would have put it, "that's all I'm going to say about that!" Made it back to the ship in plenty of time. Just not my favorite stop. I want to see Destin....I'll go to Destin!
