Cartagena...there is a free shuttle from the ship to take you to the terminal. This is a walkable distance if you are so inclined. At the terminal, look for flamingos, large & small iquanas and monkeys. Go thru the terminal (shopping) and you will find Toucans, and Red and Blue Macaws. Taxis are available here (blue shirts) and there is a HOP ON HOP OFF kiosk here as well...$25.50 for 24 hour ride pass. We did a 3 hour private tour with a college student who acted as our guide...was difficult for my husband to understand but he did take us all around the old town. If we go again...would do the HOHO to see more of the area and maybe understand more for probably the same cost as our private tour.

Colon...Panama Canal RR Journey by Train & Bus....5 1/2 hours. We opted for the less expensive trip (we didn't have the glass roof viewing). Boarded bus for 15 minute ride to train. Onto the train which has seats with tables and there is a restroom on the train. Chips, soda, Panama beer ($2.00) etc. available on the train. Nice ride thru the rainforest/along the waterways and canal. When we got off the train to get onto the bus again we were given a bottle of water and a "snack box" that included Pringles, raisins, peanuts, cookies and candy. (I understand that the more expensive version got sandwiches.) Rode bus to Flamenco Island Resort and had 25 min. to shop, eat and look around because for some reason we were unable to take the bus back to the ship...we had to ride the train back so don't know if we had our time at the resort cut short because of the train schedule or if this is the amount of time always allotted. Shops at resort seemed high priced and very, very tiny. Back to the ship where there are more stores, a bit better priced. We purchased hand painted feathers for $9.00+. HAVE TO HAVE CASH IN THESE SHOPS. Bars and cafes are here as well next to the dock.

Puntarenas (Puerto Caldera)
Tarcoles River Rating: 5+ out of 5+
Puntarenas...Free shuttle on the dock. Park at end of the dock not so for sand carvers on the beach and surfers. Information & wi-fi/coffee cafe at end of the dock. TARCOLES RIVER CRUISE ADVENTURE...5 hours. This was an EXCELLENT tour. Travel by bus for about 1 hour to the river. You will do your tour on open air boats to see crocs, crabs and birds (they give you a colored pamphlet of the birds you might see -- birdlovers...take a pen so you can mark them off...we added 10 new birds to our list thanx to our tour guide). The boat driver gets out of the boat and onto the bank to feed the huge crocs. Amazing! Fruit, coffee and drinks afterwards. Great garden & butterflies. Some nice souvenirs available here and they take credit cards. Bus back to the ship. Bus stopped for us to see White-faced Cappucine monkeys along the road. Suggest morning bugs. Rained but not that hard. "Tent" shops all along the beach area...many have the same exact items as their neighbor and they are all ready to make you a great deal.

Puerto Vallarta...we just walked. If you're interested, walk out to the main street and go to your right and within a block, you will find a fantastic fabric shop with gorgeous material. I purchased some tiny clay flowers for dollhouses...price on them was $10.99 which comes out to $1.00 U.S. Ask for help...they are very friendly and lead me around to purchase, pay for and pick up my items. Then we went to Walmart...yes, we really did...we needed toothpaste ($9.70 = $.68 U.S.) You will pass the casino on the way and there is a galleria mall next to Walmart. Back at the ship, a mariachi band and costumed girls arrived in the afternoon and played on the dock area for a bit and then were allowed to come on board to play music and the girls posed for photos in their fantastic dresses. Our advice...take photos on the dock. The pool area was terribly crowded for taking photos. Flea market very close by.

Cabo...tendered to the dock. Ship has a system that isn't that bad, just follow the directions. We didn't have a tour booked from the ship, so walked up the dock a bit and found BAJAMEX Tours. For $40.00 each, we took a glass bottom boat (glass area is small but sufficient) out to see the Arch. We saw fish, the Arch, Land's End, two beaches, seals and one couple got off the boat to stay at one of the beaches for an hour. Returned to the dock and then we were in an air conditioned van with a gentlemen who spoke English well and gave us a city tour and took us to a glass blowing factory for a demonstration and of course, shopping. Glass earrings were $3.00 a pair. Both tours took approx. 3 hours. Problems with this tour...(1) pay CASH. We had to charge and we are paying an extra 10% for the privilege. (2) once we paid for the tour, we walked to a docking area where we had to pay ANOTHER $1.00 each to get onto the dock to get onto the boat. Good about this tour...cheaper than what we would have paid thru the ship, and we felt both tours were very good. Mistake we made...should have asked to be dropped off at Cabo Wabo Cantina instead of going back to the ship. Keep that in mind. It's quite a walk in the heat. We didn't bother. There is a giant flea market area here as well to make you a deal.
