took our own trip with Van Tours of Nova Scotia recommend if want to travel on your own. Van will hold 6 but very comfortable for 4 people. Guide was very good and knowledgeable. There is a farmers market at pier but was only half open when we were there on Oct 9. The Java Factory at pier was very expensive and slow for a sandwich.
explored on our own for 3 days (had a extra day do to cancel stop at PEI) easy walking from pier to Old town. But town is on steep hill, is a tram you can take from lower level to upper level and back for $2 Canadian or $2.25 US. We walked up to see shops on road and took tram down. Lot of shops and history in town. Did have friends drive us around 1 day, to see sights out side of town.
did own walking tour, lots of shops and restaurants near port for local goods, seafood and beer. Clean city, 1 road at pier level, slight incline to next road, but easy to get around and reasonable prices.
