Not what we expected, Papeete was very disappointing, many of the shops were closed as it was Sunday. Very expensive all round, nice walk along the waterfront park but that's about it. Be wary of some of the so called operators on the port offering half price trips we met a few families off the ship who had booked snorkelling trips for here and Moorea and the didn't turn up. At these Ports my recommendation would be to book through the cruise line.
A great port if you enjoy snorkeling or diving. The stingray and shark encounter trips are great and as per the previous port review book these through the ship. If you book the afternoon trips you can grab a cab and he will take you to one of the resorts that welcome the cruise passengers at their beach and all facilities, $5 each way.
Here you can take a bus, $10 return ticket, good shopping, good caves. A must do is the cable car ride up the mountain to the gardens and the fantastic views of Wellington. You can walk from the port it will take about 15 minutes to the city centre.
