We arrived at the port around 5:30 p.m. and we were an early bus. Some of the buses got there after 7:00 p.m. with an 8:00 p.m. departure. That means the life-jacket drill was at 7:30 p.m. So the main dining room would not seat people between 6:15 and 8:00. This is very inconvenient. A lot people, including us, ate at the Lido buffet that evening. There was a show at 9:30.
The next day we were at sea, then the day after that we sailed in Glacier Bay.
The captain took the ship close to the glaciers and lingered long enough for everyone to get all of the photos they wanted. There was a Park Ranger on the forward bow to answer questions. There was also another Park Ranger on the P.A. system explaining what we were seeing. This was a good day, even though it was cold and wet. Take proper clothing!
Haines, AK, a very small town. We had a privately arranged tour with Chilkat Guides to see the Eagle Preserve. A highly recommended float/boat trip on the Chilkat River.
The next day was in Juneau. We took the HAL tour "Best of Juneau Whale Watching/Mendenhal Glacier and Orca Point Lodge." This was a boat tour in the sound and we saw many whales. Lunch at the Orca Point lodge was quite good.
Mendenhall Glacier Rating:
After lunch we went to the glacier, which is spectacular.
