Madeira (Funchal)
Botanical Garden Rating:
We were on our own in the gardens, with an agreed time to meet with the group and the guide. The gardens, of course world famous, were resplendent with an immense number of different trees and flowers. there was also a small cafe to sit down and get a coffee or a refreshing drink.
Cable Car Rating:
There was a long line, in spite of us being from an organized group. However, it was nice to look around while waiting for our turn. A photographer took our picture in the cable car before leaving. When we arrived at the top, the photo was ready, a large size photo in a nice packaging. The views from the quite long cable car ride are beyond any description: the ocean below, the ships in the port, the red tiled rooves, the vegetation... we were speechless.
City Tour Rating:
Great guide, beautiful views from the top of the mountain, also from the cable car. Watched the toboggan rides, but did not take one, chose instead to walk through the incredible Botanical Garden. The guide also took us to see an embroidery place where we watched the women create marvels of design and handwork. After the tour, we stayed in Funchal for a few more hours, as the ship was moored at walking distance. We experienced the local cuisine, as well as chatted with friendly locals. The view from the island, as we departed in the evening, was breathtaking.
Monte Walking Tour Rating:
Loved the walking tour, however sometimes it was hard to keep up with the guide and hear all her comments.
