We have been to Nassa/paradise island on 3 other vacations so we knew our way around. We went out to the street past the shops and hired a driver to take us to the public beach on paradise island called cabbage beach. The regular taxi's are vans that they try to fill up with as many people as possible going to same general location. We did not want to wait until one of them filled so we hired a guy who basically used his personal car. For $55(with tip) he took us to a liquor store so we could by some beer and took us right to the beach and we arranged a time for him to come back and pick us up which he did. Regular taxis would be less but within 15min of getting off the ship we were on our beach. Beach is beautiful. water incredibly clear. there was a beach restaurant with a full bar and serving chicken, burgers, hot dogs and other finger food at reasonable prices. $10 for chicken fingers and french fries. $4 for a corona. the beach has vendors renting chairs and umbrellas. 2 chairs and umbrella for day was $40. also had vendors selling cold water/beer/soda right on the beach.
This was basically a replacement for us getting diverted due to the guest jumping overboard on the first night of the cruise. Originally schedule to go to Key West which we were looking forward to. Took a taxi into town (Lucaya marketplace, 20 min taxi ride) just to check it out. Taxi was 12 person minivan which they loaded 14 of us into with no A/C and it was HOT. We wanted to do some light shopping and check out the beach for possible future vacations. The marketplace was mixture of open air shops and some actual structures with A/C. also had a number of restaurant and bars. it was so hot we cut the shopping real short and didn't even stop for a drink. then tried to go check out the beach at the Raddisson Our Lucay resort but it was gated and guarded and they wouldn't let us on the property for a look. so after just about 1 1/2 hours we headed back to ship. At the port there is shopping and marketplace which as we found out upon our return and checking it out had the same item for sale as the our lucaya marketplace. There is also a bar/rest right there called Pirate Cove that had DJ and reasonable beer prices and was very lively. Had a couple of drinks there and then headed back on the ship.
