Progreso
Port Rating:
While not a built up and commercial as Cozumel, this was our favorite stop. I can't stress enough how warm, friendly and humble the people were. This was once one of the wealthiest per capita areas of Mexico until the advent of synthetic fibers all but put their hemp businesses out of commission. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, this town is turning towards the tourist trade for sustenance. It is a very safe port and has almost no crime (unlike other areas of Mexico) and is within driving distance to several Mayan ruins- Dzibilchaltun being only about a 30 min. bus ride away. The prices are considerably less than Cozumel, some articles were as much as 1/3 of the price for the same item in the larger tourist area of Cozumel.
We took the Dzibitchaltun excursion which we purchased through Carnival. This exceeded our expectations. Our guide Cesar Sautos, our driver Sergio and lecturer Chapato were wonderful. We had plenty of time at the ruins because we didn't have to spend all day in a bus getting there. Chapato speaks fluent Mayan, Spanish and English and has a doctorate in Mayan studies. He took time to explain the much talked about prophesy of 2012 as well as the history of the people and their customs.
This is one of the few ruins that you can thoroughly explore and climb! You can even swim in the crystal clear waters of the Cenote. This made the tour so much better than just gazing at the ruins from afar. I highly recommend it as it is suitable for all ages, very educational, interesting and above all- FUN.

Cozumel
Beach Break Rating:
The people were very nice and the price was right. The facilities were good. They have plenty of chairs and umbrellas, a small pool, jacuzzi, changing rooms, outdoor showers, a bar and a some water toys at your disposal. They also make a nice drink:) They will allow you to use the facilities as long as you buy a drink! There are also packages that include all you can eat and drink at reasonable prices as well.
Snorkeling Rating:
Snorkeling was AWESOME! We did this right from the Ocean Beach Club at very reasonable prices. They took 8 of us out on a glass bottom boat to snorkel 2 different reefs and were very helpful to first timers. One guide stayed in the boat and one snorkeled with us- taking pictures of us with our cameras which was great! I liked that they provided life jackets for those who wanted them but didn't force those of us who were good swimmers to wear them. They provided snorkel gear as well as beer.
