Previously enjoyed this stop. However, this time it was not as enjoyable as the beach has really had a lot of erosion and there were numerous huge rocks in the water. This was dangerous if you have trouble standing and you should be very careful. There is Margaritaville with a huge pool and bar but unless you are one of the first ones off the ship, there is no seating available.
I am at a loss to understand why any cruise line stops here. This port is extremely undesirable. We have been here before and knew better not to venture off on our own unless we went on a ship excursion. So we spent the day on the ship which was nice as most people did get off. However, upon their return there was a lot of the same complaints that they felt threatened and not safe walking around. The guests who took the excursion on the resort did enjoy that trip.
We took a small boat from the dock to the beach. We were stuck on the top of the boat and the seas were extremely rough. The scenery was nice on the way to the beach. When we got there, it turned out to be a very crowded public beach. The water was nice as it was surrounded by a wall to break the waves. However, this excursion would have cost half the price to take a taxi and go on your own. We did choose to take a taxi back to the port as we did not enjoy the rough seas on the small boat to the beach. The taxi ride gave us an opportunity to see a bit of the island. This was a beautiful island with nice ships and restaurants within walking distance of the dock.
I absolutely love Aruba and have been there many times by ship and plane. Being I have been to the island, I did not feel it necessary to book an excursion. We got off the ship and grabbed a taxi and headed to Palm Beach which is in the heart of the big resorts. At the beach, you were able to rent umbrellas and chairs and if water sports were your desire, plenty of things to do. What is nice about this location is that when you have enough beach, you can walk to the resorts and grab something to eat, gamble or shop. The shops around the dock are also numerous. My only disappointment was that the ship did not stay all day and our time in one of the nicest ports of all was so short.
