In researching Nassau, I found it to be an historically significant city with noteworthy sights all within walking distance. Our walking tour included the Queens Staircase, Fort Fincastle (pay the $1 admission, the docents are knowledgeable and the view is worth it), the library, Victorian Gardens and several government buildings. We were not interested in shopping but did pick up some Bahamas logo t-shirts and had a delightful chat with the saleslady there. We also, against our better judgement, popped into Senor Frogs for a beer. Actually, it's not a bad bar but the drinks are extremely overpriced. Still, it was slow when we were there and again, had an enlightening and enjoyable conversation with bartender, Richard. He told us where we could catch the number 10 minibus to Arawak Cay. The minibus is easy to find. Be sure to have exact change ($1.25 per person per ride). Another friendly local on the bus told the driver to stop for us at the fish fry and recommended Twin Brothers. Lunch at Twin Brothers was one of the highlights of the cruise but be warned, IT IS NOT CHEAP. We wanted to try everything and had conch fritters, grouper fingers, conch salad and two beers. With tip, $60. When we were leaving, we saw many rundown trailers in an adjacent field. I imagine these are the local spots that hop at night and have cheaper menus. The minibus took us back downtown rounding out a very enjoyable first visit to Nassau.

Since our two snorkeling excursions cancelled, we found ourselves at loose ends in Freeport. It was tempting to just stay on the ship but we always want to see something. The taxi starter at the pier was very helpful. He told us if the snorkeling excursions cancelled, the seas would be too rough or visibility too poor for good snorkeling. We asked about a taxi sightseeing tour and he joined us up with four others for a 2.5 hour tour for $30 pp. The sights of Freeport are meager compared to Nassau and the devastation of the 2004 hurricane still looks fresh. Many buildings are abandoned. It was very sad and would have been depressing were it not for our drive/guide, Pamela. Just chatting with her was worth the price of admission. She gave us so many insights on growing up and living on the island, the relationship between the people and the government, cost of living comparisons. She has a great spirit and optimism for the future. If you stop in Freeport, please, get off the ship and into town and spend some dollars.
