It was raining but that did not spoil our experience, we went on the canal cruise and Gent ship's tour. The guided walk was informative and passed lots of chocolate shops, although we had very little time to shop so be warned!. The canal cruise gave ample photo opportunities-even in the rain sheiled by a brolly. Lunch was a real experience-deep fried cheese croquettes served with extra grated cheese, a flemish beef stew served with chips and apple sauce(yes-apple sauce!)evryone gamely had a go but wew were all relieved when dessert was plain old ice cream.
The tour of Gent was shorter but interesting. All in all a good day's trip out of you haven't been before but be warned a pee cots 3 euros each.
Again it rained...and yet according to the brolly I purchesd for 7 euros I love Denmark. We walked form the port area to the centre and the Tivoli gardens. The tourist map is very clear and easy to follow but it is quite a strenous walk , we are failry fit and it took us 40minutes each way, there are hop onand off buses which were being well used. We passed all the major sights-the palaces, Nyhaven etc and stooped for coffee and cakes.
There are plenty of signposted free toilets so you don't need any coins.
The Tivoli gardens charge you for entry but this doesn't cover the rides which are extra and this isn't clearly explained and feels like it is overpriced just to walk around lots of cafes and rides.
It is easy to lose track of time and by the time we returned to the ship we had been walking for 5 hours-still what a great excuse for an extra treat from the international cafe.
We walked around the city in the sunshine -very easy to find your way around from the port. There is bus to the vigeland sculpture park(no 12) and local fjord boat in front of the town hall to take you on a mini cruise or to the kon toki and fram museums.
It was a suprisingly beautiful city and we visited the palace gardens, the main shopping area , the square, the national gallery and the cathedral. Interestingly we were able to video the changing of the guard in front of th palace but not to walk in front of the entrance!
there are free loos in the gallery if anyone is interested.
