It was a third world country, I do not recommend taking your family into the port unless you have an excursion booked. We took a tour of the salt flats and mayan ruins near Progress, it was ok, not great.
Went to the beach and walked in the water up to our ankles, just to say we were in the Caribbean. Then with all of the debris floating around we went to lay on the beach. We would of used the chairs on the beach but they wanted $10 each, so we left and went shopping. Shopping was very expensive and dirty, so we returned to the ship by 1 PM.
City Tour Rating:
The place is an industrial wasteland in the Caribbean.
It was raining all day. We took a taxi tour around the island and saw how the Chinese are buying up everything on the island. Visited, Atlantis but it was raining so after 15 minutes we left. Went shopping downtown but because Carnival had 4 ships in port at once it was like shopping at the mall the day after Thanksgiving, so we returned to the ship early again.
