Bus ride to a working mill which grinds grains, sampled local meat & cheeses along with local wines, which were very good, and we would have purchased if offered for sale. Then traveled to Cavtat and did a walking tour around the harbor---not much time. There should be longer time allowed for this part of the tour. Then traveled to the walled city of Dubrovnik, and did walking tour thru city, but did not do the wall which everyone says is a must.... Save this for next time.
Loved Siciliy! We took the Footsteps of the Godfather Tour, and it was terrific. The drive to Savoca and the site of the scenes from Godfather I was fantastic. Prior to the Godfather locations we went into the church where there are the mummies. After Savoca we went to Forza D'Agro and the scenes from Godfather !! and !!!. we enjoyed pizza at a local shop just below the Church and got an impromptu tour of the pizzeria including the brick oven area! Shop owner very enthusiastic.
Can't say much about the tour, as we used the tour as a means to get us into Florence. I had arranged for a private tour of Florence. The tour is Michaelangelo Might. Sara of Florence Walking Tours was our guide and it was a 4hour tour all about Michaelangelo beginning with the David and ending with his burial in San Croce. We did rejoin our Highlights of Florence tour which took us through the Basilica San Croce and it was an interesting tour, but mostly self-guided with the guide just pointing out points of interest. On a scale of 1-5 the walking tour with Sara is a 5+, the ship's provided tour a 3.
We tendered directly opposite the Monte Carlo Casino, and then took a bus to Nice. We walked on the boardwalk, into the town for about 1hour. Then we bus rode to Eze, a fisherman's village about halfway to heaven. The rides were both beautiful, and we were very impressed with the beauty and cleanliness of the French Riviera, and would love to return. My wife fell in love with Eze, it is really worth the ride to get to it, only wish we had more than a hour to explore. The visit to Monaco was interesting, and we did a tour of the Principality's Palace, and it was so worth it. The visit to Monte Carlo Casino is limited to the entry foyer rooms, and that is sufficient. The waterside of the casino is most impressive, and we did this on our own self guided walking tour. Overall the tour was a 5.
Interesting to see in person after all these years os seeing pictures of Portofino. We thoroughly enjoyed the walk to the lighthouse. Tried to shop but prices are out of sight! If they lowered them by 50% they would still exceed Nieman's.
Santa Margherita Rating:
Overall a 5, but the main complaint being we did not have enough time to really explore San Margherita. The water taxi/bus service to where our tender docks in Portofino made it somewhat difficult to spend anytime without being concerned about missing the tender. May not be the best excuse but the only one we've got. The walk to the Portofino Lighthouse was amazing and we really enjoyed it. Again not enough time to really explore. Can't wait to return.
