It is very convenient to dock right downtown on Front Street, a couple blocks from the ferry or bus terminals to get anywhere on the island. On Wednesday nights they have a music festival there (cancelled on our cruise due to high winds). You don't need to take shore excursions; you can do pretty much anything on your own.
