We went on a bicycle tour around the city seeing the sights, cathedral, vasa museum and many others. We had a wonderful guide and possibly saw as much of the city as the people who went on excursions although didn't go into any of these. Had some free time in the city centre for coffee, shopping etc. A wonderful day.
Went into Helsinki on a shuttle bus which stopped in the centre close to the market hall. There was an outside market with crafts and local foods to try and buy. We visited the Lutherian Cathedral and also Uspensky Cathedral and stopped off in the Town hall for toilet facilities, which were free and very clean.
One word describes this 'Stunning' although disappointed that we could not take photos but bought a book with the Amber room in it.
Catherine Palace Rating:
How this has been restored since the war is unbelievable. How they have recreated some of the treasures and restored the interior is beyond belief.
Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood Rating:
Although we did not have time to take a tour round the Cathedral it was worth standing outside as I would imagine it was as stunning inside as out.
Peter & Paul Fortress Rating:
Again not enough time to take in all the sights and explore, but hopefully we can visit again.
Peterhof Palace Rating:
How the Russians could have done so much in such a short time is unbelievable, when you see the photographs from after the war.
St. Isaac's Cathedral Rating:
Just 4 words describe St Petersburg 'Out of this World'. The Palaces were outstanding and not enough time really to explore them or to look at all the treasures. Peterhof Palace you could have spent the whole day in the gardens alone and to see what it was after the war is an inspiration. Catherine's Palace and the Amber Room were absolutely stunning. The Peter and Paul Fortress again not enough time to explore or see all the things there. The Cathedrals were beautiful and words can't describe how wonderful they are.
What a jewel with its winding cobbled streets and alleyways, little courtyards with cafes and craft shops and in such a small space is something to be seen. A little short on conveniences but plenty of cafes and bars around.
