Amsterdam Port Cruise Terminal is new, large & modern. It is 10 minutes walk from the Main Train Station and perhaps a 20 minute walk from Dam square. There are lots of canal tour boats nearby and you can pick up these tours at the tourist booth inside the Terminal. We picked up a tourist map and walked into the city.
Very nice guide Britta - we started at the Holsten Gate, saw the old Merchants houses and canals, went to see some of the rebuilt churches (everything was rebuilt in the 1950's after much of the town was destroyed in bombing). Had dinner in an old sailers' meeting house with lots of nautical memoribilia decorating the old tavern. Visited the market and Niederegger Marzipan shop. Tour sometimes dragged a bit because of the age of walkers, sort of place we would have been happy to walk round independantly and just use the coach to transport us to the town, possibly meeting up for the meal later.
