Buenos Aires
Port Rating:
Great city, but be very careful with your belongings. Many people were impacted by the pick-pockets. Keep your money in a pouch around your neck, under your clothes. Several people lost passports, cameras, and money. The city highlights tour we took was great and covered the entire city. Look for good buys in leather.

Port Rating:
This is the Falkland Islands and we were not able to tender to the port due to rough seas. Apparently, this happens often.

Ushuaia
Port Rating:
Great port that takes you to the Terra Del Fuego National Park. This is the southern most port in South America. the park is beautiful. The town is small. We sent postcards from here on March 25th, and as of May 7th, they still haven't arrived in the US.
We we're 2 hours late leaving as the Argentine government had an argument with the Captain. They didn't was the Veendam to visit the Falklands next year. The Argentines' and English are still arguing over the Falklands. The problem delayed us to the point that we missed Glacier Alley
Weather was Chilly March 25

Punta Arenas
Penguin Reserve Rating:
The Penguin Reserve was fabulous. We took a 2 hour ferry to the Magdalena Island reserve then spent an hour with the penguins. There were hundreds of them and we were very close to them. They were beginning to leave this area for the winter, so I was so pleased that many of them waited until our visit before leaving. Thank you penguins. They were Gentoo penguins and are relatively small. This was one of our favorite experiences.

Puerto Montt
Port Rating:
We visited the lake area, saw a beautiful dormant volcano and then the beautiful Petrohue Falls. Great trip and beautiful scenery. This was the first place we could really see the Andes and they are magnificent.

Santiago (Valparaiso)
Port Rating:
We docked at Valparaiso which is about 2 hours west of Santiago. Valparaiso is a lovely coastal town and many passengers disembarked here. Also many joined the cruise. Since we were doing neither, we took a day-long tour to Santiago.
Santiago is a beautiful city and we were able to see the changing of the guard at the palace, visit an artisan market, and have a lovely lunch on a hillside before hurrying back to the ship for another evacuation drill. We were late, but they waited for us.

Lima
Port Rating:
Great port. We were there 2 days which gave us time to take a tour, wonder on our own, and go to dinner at a lovely old mansion. We arrived on Good Friday and these people celebrate the "funeral of Jesus" as I've never experienced. There were about 1,000 people in the square at night with Jesus laying in a glass casket followed by many many candles. It was beautiful. We got caught up in the crowd and were not sure how to get to dinner, but were rescued by another HAL group and all ended well.
