Walked into the town and took a Hop on - Hop Off double deck bus tour of the city. It was an economic way to see the city and we could get off and explore and then get back on again to the next stopping point. This is a great alternative for the first time visitor to this (or any) city.
The best way to experience the dramatic scenery of this volcanic island is by taking the cruise lines' tour. Once on Fire Mountain there is another 'special' bus that takes you on a tour over private roads to see for yourself the moon like landscape created by volcanic activity.
Walked into the town and wandered round the shops before sampling some delicious local food. Easy to find your way around although, being Christmas time the streets were quite crowded.
Pretty little port of call. Took the ship's shuttle into town and walked around. Attractive and colourful buildings with ornate balconies abounded. Good 'flea market' on the main promenade. Fair choice of cafes and bars. Good beach to the west of the town.
While it is walk-able, a shuttle bus service was available from the quay to the city centre. This is a very attractive city with several shopping streets. Most of the streets are cobbled. Lots to see in the centre and an excellent selection of tours to choose from. The city has several good restaurants in which to taste local dishes, sample the wines and, of course, sip some delicious Madeira wine.
