Had a great time

Sail Date: March 2012
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Tampa

I don't know what the other reviews were talking about with this cruise or the cruise line but we found it to be EXCELLENT (the word used often with our cruise director) Although the ship was not one of the later ones, we felt that it was quite comfortable and exceeded our expectations. Our room was very nice (although we would not pay extra for the obstructed view next time)The bathroom was not spacious but adequate for the time we spent in our cabin. We have not complaints about the food. The buffet was fine for us and we did eat our first dinner on the ship in Le Bistro and would highly recommend it. It was definitely a dining experience. The buffet was very convenient for us as we could eat whenever we liked (they did close between meals for clean up and set up for the next service)We did eat at Aqua several times and have no complaints. We found the food to be very good and the service very good also. We had read reviews that said the wait was ridiculous but never found More that to be true. We ate between 6:00 and 6:30 and never had to wait. We walked right in. The shows were spectacular, like being in Vegas. Our cruise director, Kyle was fun and made the trip enjoyable without being too obnoxious.
We planned our shore excursions before our trip and recommend to do that. We visited Tabyana Beach and Gumbalimba Park in Belize. It was fun but it was raining so the beach was out. It was a beautiful beach and if you have the time and the weather permits you, stay a while. We also went to the Lamanai Ruins and River Safari and highly recommend it. The trip to get there was long and very educational but so worth it. The ATV Jungle and Beach Adventure was great also. I never drove an ATV but it was easy. Just about anyone over 16 can do it. Our last excursion was the Mexican Cuisine Workshop. OMG what a blast. If you don't go on any other excursion, do this one. What a blast!! The chef was GREAT. We started our class with our drink orders. At 10 in the morning, we were cooking and drinking. They made any drink you wanted and they were never ending. We ate the meal we cooked and had time to relax by the ocean or pool. This was one of my favorite excursions.
I have only one complaint with this cruise and that is the spring breakers. The took over the hot tubs and pool area. We saw so many drunk kids that I am sure that some of them won't remember their trip. My suggestion would be to make one floor for just the college kids. That way, they can party together and leave us older people alone. Also an area for 50 or older would be nice. There weren't too many places to be able to sit and read a book quietly. The reggae music was constant and loud. Very unpleasant.
As said before, this cruise was a great experience for us. The other reviews about this trip/ship must have be written by people from Carnival. We found them not to be true. We would definitely sail with Norwegian again. Great trip. Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Star 8590

We found our cabin to be very spacious. The bed was very comfortable, not like the reviews we had read that they were just a piece of foam over a mattress. We had an obscured view cabin and don't think we would pay extra next time for that type of room. The bathroom was not spacious but for the time we spent in our cabin, it was okay. There was plenty of space for out clothes. Our room steward bent over backwards for us. He was so pleasant and smiled all the time. He really seemed to enjoy his work. We always had fresh ice and a supply of soda. I really liked the animal figures he made with the towels. Very cute.

Port and Shore Excursions

What a trip!! This was truly amazing. To get to the ruins, we had to take a one hour bus ride through the city. At time it was election day and the streets were lined with protesters and police with sub machine guns. Very strange. After the bus ride, we had to transfer to a river boat which took you on another 25 miles to the site. It rained while we were on the boat and we got soaking wet. It did not last long and by the time we got to the ruins, we were pretty much dry. We trekked through the rain forest for awhile and finally came upon the ruins. An amazing sight. Structures some of them one hundred feet high. Some of the kids on our tour got bored fast so maybe think before you include them in this excursion.

ATV Adventure

(5)
We took a 30 minute bus ride to the site and were given instructions on driving the ATV's. It wasn't hard. We followed our guide through thickets of mangroves, mud, water and dirt roads. It lasted about an hour and we had time to sit on the beach.

Beach Break

(5)
We were able to take a short beach break. We only had 40 minutes left from our ATV ride and it did not seem like enough time to get wet and lay in the sun. The water was rough that day and there was seaweed and junk washing up on shore. But that was okay. We had a couple of beer and some salsa and just relaxed.

Culinary Tour

If you don't do any other excursion, do this one. We had a blast. When we got there after a 15 minute bus ride, we were greeted by the chef and assigned our cooking spaces. Then the drink orders were taken. It was 10 in the morning and we were already drinking. And they made any type of drink you wanted. (and they kept on coming) We made three separate dishes and ate them at the end of the class. Our chef was hysterical and made the class even more fun. This is not class for kids but the adults will love it. A must do choice.

Being our first port, we did not know what to expect. Our tour through the park was very nice and educational. This is not for children. They would get bored fast, as we saw with our group. Be prepared to walk. The highlight of that trip were the monkeys and parrots. We got to hold them while the keepers fed them treats. That was really neat.
