Nice surprise with NCL

Sail Date: February 2012
Destination: Canary Islands
Embarkation: Other

I rarely write reviews, but I believe that this may prove useful to those considering NCL.

We have cruised on most of the lines - 4,5 and 6 star. Many comments regarding NCL have been warnings not to cruise with them for various reasons.

However, as we are in Spain for the winter and NCL is the only cruiseline cruising from Malaga, we thought we would give it a go. The price was VERY reasonable and we had a balcony cabin which was fairly standard.

The ship is nothing to write home about. Lacks the glitz of Royal Caribbean and the elegance of Celebrity etc. No champagne upon boarding!! But after the first shock, the ship is actually quite 'comfortable'.

BUT, the staff are probably the best we have experienced - always smiling and offering excellent service - they do seem to be a very happy team
.
The Cruise Director was the very talented Gary - personable, helpful and speaking seven languages fluently, he is an asset to any cruiseline. The More entertainment was very good. The Casino permits smoking which meant that we didn't visit the slots as often as usual - probably a plus for my pocket!!

The beds were very comfortable and the carpet in the cabin obviously quite new.

The food in the buffet was varied and compared favourably with other cruiselines and there was the option of eating in the Italian Kitchen at breakfast and lunch, in order to get away from the crowds at peak time (as on all cruiselines)although you did have to collect the food from the buffet. The large main dining room was too busy for us, but we enjoyed the Alizar, which is smaller and more 'sectioned'. The German chef is very dedicated and the food was cooked to order. The salmon was the best we have had on a ship and
was not overcooked. The steaks were also very good and cooked to order. No complaints from us re the food.

We also loved the fact that we could get breakfast until midday.

The Blue Lagoon serves excellent food in a very nice, small restaurant-type atmosphere and is open 24-hours - which proved very useful.

All in all, it was a very nice surprise and we intend to cruise again with them in the near future - say no more!! Less
