Our first mexican Riviera cruise

Sail Date: February 2012
Destination: Mexican Riviera
Embarkation: Los Angeles

Positive Comments:
Very glad to see significant improvements in muster drill quality, presence of officers to monitor quality, new safety equipment, visible lifeboat drill in Puerto Vallarta. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
Loved the newly-reinstated ship tour. Superior pre-boarding check-in logistics -- minimal lines;
Crew members were exceptionally friendly (first cruise we've seen the Maitre D',other than the last formal dinner night; Desi came by all tables in our section every night. What a shining star she is! Dining waitstaff was exceptional -- Romeo, Lukman, Kadek, Alejandro, Marion, Desi); great personalities and wonderful service!
Room stewards were outstanding -- great service, always smiling like old friends (Gabriel, Leonardus and Myshell); Ship was spotless. Enjoyed this cruise more than on Carnival Magic last December.

Negative Comments:
We were very disappointed in the lack of information and lack of concern from the excursion More desk staff regarding the Puerto Vallarta robbery on the prior cruise. When asked for more information so we could make an informed decision about P.V. excursions, the excursion rep at the desk disdainfully remarked "well, nobody got hurt" and offered no other information. Clearly he was following instructions from Carnival's management team -- VERY DISAPPOINTING. If we hadn't found someone on board who knew one of the people who were held up, and that the excursion went to a remote location,we likely would have stayed on the ship in P.V. I'm so glad we cancelled our P.V. zipline tour a few days before we boarded the ship. The newly-added safety and liability disclaimer to Carnival's excursion brochure, and the new 25% penalty for cancelled excursions, was further evidence of Carnival's lack of concern for passenger safety during port excursions. Quality of onboard photographs was worst of any cruise we've been on. Photo with captain, my wife and I on bridge during ship tour was poor-- my wife's eyes were closed. This was a small tour group and the photographer should have previewed the photo and immediately re-shot it.
Assistant cruise director (Brian from Chicago) made several rude comments about passengers over the microphone during the week -- apparently unaware that the individuals were offended. At times he came off as goofy. He needs to polish his public persona. Less

Cabin review: Carnival Splendor Balcony Empress 7342

Room was nice and quiet, good location and balcony. Laid out very well for two people. No complaints. Location, location, location, always check your location. Chose portside for this cruise. Wife likes sunsets at sea.

Port and Shore Excursions

Splendor seems to have a lot of practice getting people off ship onto tenders with no pain. If only they could do that in the Grand Caymen.(Carnival Magic). Booked excursion thru ship, first time here. We booked Cabo by Land and Sea. Took catamaran out of harbor to see the famous Arch and Lands End. A little rough for some.Free drinks. We then boarded a bus and went to a glass blowing factory.Nice stuff. We then went to town, toured a park and had lunch at "Mi Casa" across the street. Great food and tequila. Boarded the bus again and drove down coast to "Sunset of De Mona Lisa'. A beautiful site and view of harbor. Got free drink while sitting on terrace enjoying view. Loaded bus again and headed down coast to Cabo San Jose. Loved this place. Found a small coffee shop on the plaza. Had a guy playing guitar, awesome. Strolled thru plaza and shops making our way back to bus. Didn't want to leave this place. Betty, our guide was very informational throughout the whole excursion. Yes, I would recommend this excursion. On second day in port, we walked around harbor and went to the Volunteer Fire Dept. to buy shirts and pins. Visited with members and got their website info for travelers to contact for designated drivers to pick you up at the port and take you anywhere you want to go. All drivers are local Cabo San Lucas firefighters. email is designated.drivers.l oscabos@gmail.com. phone number is 624 159 01 09.

Since reading about tour bus being robbed week before at Puetro Vallarta, we cancelled Canopy Adventure before flying to Long Beach. Thank you Cruise Critic for getting the word out. We walked over to Walmart and looked around bought cookies and crackers for our room stewards. Knowing crew would be able to leave ship at Puerto Vallarta, my wife and I slipped our wait and room staff some money to help them purchase items ashore. We booked a 3:30PM tour with Carnival. Reason for this was Catamaran left right by ship and proceeded to Las Caletas. Free drinks flowed to Las Caletas. Place was a tropical paradise. Great food, drinks, and show. On our boat trip back, the crew put on a skit and got everyone involved. Took every one's mind off the bumpy ride back. Beautiful night, stars shining and a almost full moon. Everyone on Carnival Splendor was outside on deck waving to us as we came by the ship to depart at the dock. Quite an adventure, would do it again in a heartbeat!
