We chose this itinerary due to the 4 days as sea and the Belize port as we've been to both Costa Rica and Panama B4. A perfect experience! The ship is gorgeous; well kept by crew and staff was very hospitable. Of course, on any cruise - the people we meet enhance the "fun factor" which we're grateful to have met some really great people....from the PARTY GROUP from Rhode Island (the first night they arrived a few of them were in the casino bar...two hurled, one fell off a chair and cracked his head...etc, etc....so you can only imagine by starting out their cruise in this fashion how the balance of the cruise played out!? All in all everyone truly maximized their time on and off the ship. Also, met some great people from Miami: Mike and Lydia - hope all is well and all our prayers for your new baby coming in July!!! - Geeno and Juli, Coleen and Jamie (who won the hairy chest contest...great tarzan howl) - We hope to keep in touch in the future.
PORTS: BELIZE - We chose snorkeling - overcast day - have done the stingray thing before so next time would opt for the cave/tubing excursion - BUT would book it on our own rather than through the cruise ship. We're a bit younger and more adventurous - but this doesn't mean that we're not without caution when venturing out on our own. We chose to take tours with 2 other couples and a taxi driver we could bargain with. Keep in mind that the cruise ship negotiates with these tours and gets a 'pce of the pie' too - as if they don't make enough money as it is ON the ship from the passengers! COSTA RICA - Zip Lining - booked as we got off the ship. Definitely take the ZIP LINING tour closest to the ship - NOT CORAL BREEZE as it's 2 hours away - long trip...OUCH -it's a new tour and safe - very beautiful drive - gorgeous bamboo trees, wildlife; sloths, monkeys...it's really a great experience - $40/pp - well worth it - the driver will stay with you the entire time, take you to eat afterward - I'd suggest a nice place atop a mountain overlooking the cruise ship - great photo opps! If you're afraid of heights or hungover....don't do this tour...you'll THINK you can but when you're all hooked up and ready to zip line over the tree tops...you'll have second thoughts....We did...and bailed out at the last second..(got 50% $$ back) but just decided not to take it! FYI PANAMA: You may choose to take the ship excursion here - we didn't - chose a taxi tour with a good guy - $20/pp - saw the Panama Canal, ate at a local marina - Panama beers for 6 - $7 - very cheap. Also, if you want to shop for textiles, shoes, watches...This is the place to do it - get a taxi to take you to the Merchandise Mart - over 3000 shops - it's NOT a flea market. Next to Hong Kong - this is the largest shopping mart port in the world. 50% from regular retail prices - stores owners from all over come here to buy bulk wholesale prices and ship merchandise back to sell - it's really a bargain - Didn't need anything so didn't go shopping - decided to shop for trinkets by the port. Beware of all sorts of taxi drivers coming up to persuade you to take their taxi...it's a bit overwhelming IF you're not in a group or of large stature. I'm 5'11 and 230 lbs....very well built so when I said 'no thanks' they got the hint...FAST!
All in all the food was above par in the "Truffles" main dining room, The Golden Fleece - private dining to be booked independently, so book asap once on the ship - you'll see the staff right when you walk on to the ship - is really a great experience and SUPERB food...I mean it when I tell you....I have to detox and start back working out ASAP if I'm going to lose the weight come boating/spring/summer/beachtime season...YIKES! A+ to everyone on the Legend from top to bottom and everyone in between... Oh...and Chole in the Karaoke (Firebird) lounge....you're wicked sweetheart - thanks for playing our songs!
Respectfully, Mike and Renae
