Due to previous comments, I was expecting to be disappointed but was certainly not. We stayed at the Sheraton Old San Jan Hotel which was clean, well appointed and had a great staff who went above and beyond the call of duty when I needed it.
This is a great hotel for those who wish to walk around the old part of San Juan.
The embarkation process needs improvement as I noted those with baggage had to line up to check their luggage and then get to the back of the other line to check in. In our case, Royal Caribbean transferred our luggage from the hotel to the ship so that we went straight to the check-in line. Once inside, the lines moved fairly quickly. There was a Priority sign but it was not visible due to the crush of the crowds. I suggest they raise the various signs higher so they can easily been seen.
The ship is very clean and certainly did not look it's age. I did feel the "shuddering" several times but it did not cause any problem. The staff were all very friendly. The food was generally very good with the exception of the main dining room - the meals there were sometimes good and sometimes not. The service was excellent wherever we went. Qian in the 19th Hole Lounge was exceptionally gracious in handling the Diamond members who were upset that the Nightly Diamond Event (free champagne, wine) the Diamond members were invited to and which was stated to be from 5 - 8.30 p.m. was changed, without notice, to start at 6 p.m. at which time most members had to leave for dinner. After several calls to contact the proper authority, she managed to have someone from the Loyalty Ambassador area come to address the situation. After apologizing to all, the hours were changed back to what they were originally, giving these members time to have a drink or two before dinner and enjoy the company of their newfound friends. RCCL staff need to remember that these people who come back year-after-year are the ones who help with the success of the company and should not be dismissed so easily in what appears to be a money-saving move.
The entertainment was good and the ice show particularly so. One must arrive early however to get a seat. The shows on the Promenade were fun and well attended.
The excursions seemed to be well attended and from all reports they were as advertised. The piers at St. Maarten and Barbados are quite long but there are trolleys or buses to take people from the ship to their buses to start their tours.
The departure process worked very efficiently compared to embarkation. After a short wait, we were off the ship, got our luggage, went through customs and got a taxi all in less than 15-20 minutes.
