Ship Facts: Costa Classica Review (by Cruise Critic!) | Costa Classica Deck Plans
Costa Classica Disappointment
Unfortunately we hadn't read any reviews on the ship until after it was booked and paid for, and though we panicked on reading them, we still decided to go with an open mind.

On December 23rd we eagerly boarded our much awaited holiday. As we have never done a Christmas or New Year cruise we couldn't wait.

On walking onto the ship we immediately met the foul stench of cigarette and cigar smoke wafting down through the inner upper decks. Though I am a smoker myself, it didn't stop the feeling of nausea that also came upon me and the rest of my party...To think we had to subject children to this was unbelievable. Though smelly we did find the ship to be quite clean...Our cabin was quite respectable in size, and our cabin steward absolutely wonderful....Air conditioning was always hit and miss, door on wardrobe continually falling off, toilets constantly backing up, and a horrible skinny shower head that only let water out sometimes, and I wont get started about the shower curtain...But the towels were lovely, clean and fluffy...

Our Waiters in the main restaurant Rolando was absolutely incredible, what he wouldn't do for his tables was incredible, always with a smile and a joke, he made our holiday. His service was impeccable. However since it was also a Christmas cruise, there was no fancy dinner for Christmas day..

In reference to the rest of the crew and bar staff, we found them to be completely useless, the ship is completely understaffed and we found one day waiting for 3 hours for a drink in the casino...We were constantly going to the bar ourselves rather than waiting for staff, then to find them all up at the front bar chatting and relaxing instead of serving passengers...

We constantly found underage gambling in the Casino, which was constantly allowed, unless you spoke English, then you were told to get out...We reported approx 7 times Italian/Russian children playing the machines whilst the casino manager chatted to the parents sitting next to the said children playing the machines...

We found constant nude and topless bathing around the pools and upper deck...Whilst I am not a prude, I dont believe any child should be subjected to this and on a cruise ship completely unessesary....

Breakfast in the buffet was liking to bomb going off, every man for themselves. The pushing and shoving from passengers as if it was their last meal was incredible...The food there, seem to be extremely cold, bland and the same thing pretty much each day...Whilst it was annoying you couldn't get a coffee or tea after 10.00pm, it was handy to have the facilities in your cabin...

We found constantly crew and officers sitting on the top decks drinking and smoking, in large groups preventing the paying passengers sitting down. We witnessed crew abusing crew, crew abusing passengers and crew eating the leftover food from passengers.

We looked forward to the Italian food and delicacies, but whoever was cooking couldn't have been Italian...The pasta was always overcooked and everything was constantly full of salt and with no flavour...

We found our English speaking hostess Shannon to be completely useless...On voicing our concerns, she told us "that our personal opinion was wrong' and was more concerned on explaining on how to fill out the questionnaire so she would receive her bonus...She became quite agitated and aggressive and extremely rude....

We found that anyone who spoke or looked English/Australian were treated as second rate passengers against the Italians...Which was proven on arriving in Langkawi..On board the Italians were treated as gods, however on this particular bus, the tour guide could only speak English, an Italian gentlemen and his party rudely asked he spoke Italian, when advised that the tour guide could only speak English and Malay, the Italian gentlemen rudely commented that the English sucked, and continued to talk so loudly in Italian to his group that no one else on the bus could hear the tour guide....

The same said gentlemen on receiving a tender ticket to get off in Phuket, decided because he was Italian and on an Italian ship he was going to ignore the number on the ticket, push myself and daughter almost down the stairs to get on the tender. When he got to the bottom, it was noted that he his number was 41 and they were only calling 36, he got quite irate about having to wait, so the Italian staff decided to pass him through to the tender, much to the disgust off all the waiting passengers with the correct number...On this occurrence the Japanese were our best allies, with a group loudly complaining on the double standards on this ship.

The old saying, you get what you paid for will definitely not match this ship...This was not a cheap cruise by far, and with plenty of cruises to back it up, I can confidently say that this cruise company is more of a 2 star than a 3.5 star....

Overall we found the service to be of sub standard and the communication terrible...Their organisational skills leave something to be desired, as does the complete running of the ship...The Captain was constantly sitting on the top deck with a beer smoking with his officers...

Everything in different languages so when translated to english, things are being left out, especially in the daily newsletter...Teenager club useless, things always being cancelled or not where it supposed to be...most activities for teenagers didnt start until 11.30 at night....Kids club for younger kids, pretty good, no real major complaints...

Everything is so expensive...Purchased an anniversary package, however half of the items included were missing, didnt even get the invite to the special honeymooners cocktail (that was paid for inside the package), until after the event...No happy hour, however we did have the beer packages which reduced the cost down a little bit, and we also purchased 5, kids 20 drink packages, however it gets included for the whole cabin, so everyone in the cabin can use it, including the adults...

We will definitely not be using Costa in the future and have advised friends and family to do the same....
