Good Cruise on Well Kept Fascination

Sail Date: January 2012
Destination: Bahamas
Embarkation: Jacksonville

Greatly enjoyed out recent cruise on the Fascination. Mostly surprised on the upside. The ship was well kept. CCL is to be commended for keeping up one of its older smaller Fantasy class ships. No this ship does not have all the features of the newer larger ships. No surcharge restaurants and just a single pool to say nothing of lacking an ice rink or climbing walls. If you demand these features then stay away. BUT the food, staff cabins and public rooms were all good and modern.

Went on the cruise nervous about going on an old ship with a lousy CD. Jen Baxter wasn't great but she wasn't bad. Not sure why she so grates on others. The activity's on board are the usual with enjoyable (amateurish)shows. It ain't Cirque du Soleil, not even close! Lots of trivia contests. Again, the usual.Lots and lots to keep you occupied. Really enjoyed the afternoon tea. Note to Carnival, don't discontinue these.

The food in the MDR was very good as usual. We had Your Time Dining which was More great. (Would never cruise with assigned dining times). We had to wait once for all of 15 minutes. That night we got an apology and chocolate covered strawberries in both our cabin and also our kids.Wish life was always like this.

The new menu was good. Not sure why there are so many complaining about it on CC. Ya know you don't have to eat the meatloaf. We also enjoyed the calm of the MDR for several breakfasts and lunches.

The lido buffet was good. Yes there can be long lines at the various stations. Not hard to avoid these. Seemed the longer line ups were different on different days so we avoided the Mongolian station one day or the deli sandwich area on another. Again, no big deal except for complainers.

Out steward was good but our cabin had a smoky smell when we boarded. After 2 days and multiple ionization treatments it was (almost)gone.
Speaking of smoking, VERY HAPPY with the new more restricted policy. Allowed us to go to the piano bar and most everywhere else. This was our kids (not really kids at 18 & 20) first cruise. The loved it. Found lots of others their age to hang out with. They are now hooked!

Besides the cabin odor the only other complaint we had is the port location in Jacksonville. This is not a dig at the city but we were unable to deboard because of serious fog on the final day. Between problems clearing the bridge due to tides and wind and our fog, maybe Carnival should ask/demand a new port if it stays in Jacksonville. The next cruise we were told would only start boarding at 3PM or later. Not good.

Also sad that CCL has stopped printing a daily paper. Not sure it was vey popular but I enjoyed it!

Besides this, we had a very good cruise. The value/quality provided by Carnival was great. We will certainly do it again and the PT cabins we had were an excellent deal. Less

Cabin review: Carnival Fascination Interior Empress U27

We had 2 PT cabins, U27 and R18. Good value BUT you will here the thrusters when entering a port. You might also hear this noise in any cabin class depending on location. Best to get a PT further away from the stern if possible.R deck (4th) was not a problem for our kids although it involves more stairs. We enjoyed being on Upper(6th) deck and almost always used the stairs.
