It's been over fifteen years since my first cruise aboard Sovereign of the Seas on Royal Caribbean. From the moment my embarkation photo was snapped, I was already hooked. I don't know if it was the crystal blue water of the Caribbean, the sparkling atrium, the lavish midnight buffet or the pool deck parties, I knew cruising was for me and I was more than willing to ignore staterooms smaller than most civilized walk-in-closets to live this dream as often as I could.

Almost two decades, fourteen cruises and far more than fourteen pounds later, I have seen more changes in the cruise industry than Lindsay Lohan has seen rehab centers. Most midnight buffets are gone and specialty restaurants are in. With four RCI, four Carnival, three Princess, two Holland America and one Norwegian cruise notch in my belt, both my wife and I have grown to love each line and celebrate their differences in the great spirit of travel and leisure. Simply put, up to this point, we had never been on a bad cruise.

So once our home was free from relatives and Christmas decorations, Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas five-day sailing to Mexico seemed like it would be just what the doctor ordered. Many of our friends and family had told us how beautiful the Jewel and her twin sisters were. Additionally, Cruise Critic rates the JOS as a 5-star ship so needless to say, our expectations were pretty high. Additionally, we had not been on a Royal Caribbean ship for over two years so we were quite excited to be back.
