We thought about going on this Hawaii cruise a few years ago but read the Cruise Critic reviews and changed our minds. Back then the reviews said beware of the horrible all American wait staff and terrible attitudes. No Mr. this or Mr that, no yes sir! it was all about, "hold on dude" from smart alec American kid working there. Anyway the reviews have since gotten better and we really wanted to try it, so we booked the Dec 3rd, 2011 cruise. We were prepared for crummy service and did not expect much. Our sights were set on low. We just wanted to use the ship as a floating hotel and do some excursions to see the islands neither one of us had seen before, but had heard about our whole lives.
Just got off that same Pride of America from cruising seven days around Hawaii. It was our 30Th anniversary present to ourselves. The first night we did the "Cruise Critic meet and greet" with all the important officers from food and beverage and the hotel and entertainment, and the Captain. All of them. Very impressive. They hosted us at five thirty in one of the bars with free Mia Tai's and snacks. Each one introduced themselves and said that they wanted us to have a wonderful cruise and if there was anything at all they could do to make our cruise better that we should let them know. Personally. They are concerned with what we write here on the Cruise Critic and encouraged us to write but also to make sure that they knew anything that wasn't right as well, while we were still there on the ship. They basically wanted to make sure what it was we were going to complain about and try to fix it. Very much concerned with us because of the power of the pen. That's the way it should be.
Impressive. Clean as a pin. The chrome sparkled, I dared my wife to find a stain on the carpet. anywhere, she could not. This ship is clean.
We made reservations for each night at the added cost restaurants, but went to the no cost Skyline the first night because of lobster on the menu Sat night. Terrific. Excellent service and food. All the silverware sparkled. The water glasses looked like they were all polished with a bar towel. Lovely entertainment. The next morning we cancelled all the pricey restaurant reservations except one. The Skyline and Liberty dining rooms we just beautiful.
All the workers were friendly, courteous and helpful. Not at all what we expected.
The room was small but big enough, we had a little trouble passing if we both went around the end of the bed at the same time but not a problem at all.
The ship was so nice we looked forward to getting back on at the end of our days exploring.
One day an officer came knocked on our room door just to see if we had any complaints and see how things were going. Really concerned with us Cruise Critic writers and what we are going to say. Another day an officer called just to check up. They are really trying to get it right.
Anyway the complaints I have are
1)the crappy little 13" low def tv's,
2)poor channel selection
3)crummy internet. It's 2011, there should be free wifi throughout the ship at all times. People want to stay connected.
4)Oh, and I got kind of dizzy when they changed the itinerary from sailing around the big island from clockwise to counterclockwise without letting me and my internal compass know.
5) don't piss off Pele the Goddess of the Volcanoes by pilfering any volcanic rock. bad bad luck.
