The compound at the port we stopped at (Puerto Maya) is very clean with lost of shop & restuarants.  My husband and I wanted to go to Margaritaville so we walked 3-1/2 miles to town to get there (Yes, we did...and 3-1/2 miles back...we are walkers) Along the way, we were asked if we wanted to take a taxi, or a tour, or an excursion.  However, no one was pushy.  The scenery was lovely along the walk and I got some beautiful photos.  At the shops, I was able to bargain with the vendors.   I got some excellent deals.  You just have to ask.  All they can say is no.  But most of them are ready to bargain.    My husband got a few beers at an inexpensive price.  With all the walking, he was thirsty!  I love Cozumel. It is my favorite port!

Cozumel

The shops in the port compound are clean and reasonable.  However, when you go outside the compound, things get messy.  Although I am sure you can get much better prices outside, the sellers are so pushy that I just don't think it is worth the hassle.  I understand that they are poor and that this is their livlihood, but enough is enough.

Belize City

This cruise was the first time that my husband and I had been to Roatan.  There were shops inside the port compound, but they were expensive.  However, I was able to bargain with a few of the vendors.  I got some lovely wooden, hand-carved boxes for my daughter and granddaughter at a reasonable price.  
As this was our first time at this port, we wanted to explore some.  We walked outside the compound and were bombarded with men wanting us to take their taxi into town.  There were literally dozens of them lined up on both sides of the street.  We said no thanks, we are going to walk.  However, we did decide to hire a taxi and the driver was very nice, although quite.  He took us on a tour of the area, charged $20.00 dollars each.  He stopped for me to get photos and even took us to some places he felt would make good photo ops.  The area seems to be poor, poor, poor.  The roads were, to put it mildly, horrible.  Huge potholes, narrow, muddy.  Some were roped off because they were so bad.  He also took us to an area where the rich people lived.  The contrast is stark.  I'm sure that if we booked a tour from the cruise ship we would not have seen the things that we did with a private tour guide.
After our tour, we walked over to the beach, Mahogany Bay beach.  It was lovely to look at.  However, we did not to spend much time there because we had to be back on the ship at 2:30 (A bummer!!!)  Also, the weather was rainy again and windy.  
We did see an octupus, cigar fish, crabs, and urchins in the water.  That was nice!
I hope that we will one day go back to this port and have more time to spend there.  And I hope that the weather is better.

Roatan

This was the 13th cruise my husband and I have taken (all on Carnival---I am very satisfied with Carnival, so why go on others?).  However this is the first time we have ever had a cabin with an obstructed view.  We usually just get interior (we are hardly ever in the room, so what's the big deal?).  This time we booked interior and was upgraded.  I have to say, this was the best room!  Even though the view was obstructed by a lifeboat, we could still see what the weather was outside and, best of all, we left one door open at night and listened to the ocean.  Also, the room was huge compared to a regular interior room.  We had a sofa with a table.  I LOVE this room!

We did not make use of the private dining room (why pay extra when you can get all the good food you want for free?**our day at sea was rainy & windy, keeping everybody inside & the next day we were to go to Grand Caymen but the weather was 'yucky' (our captain's choice of words)  so we didn't get to go.
