A FUN MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE ON SEABOURN LEGEND
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
We sailed on a Rome-to-Rome cruise in late October, that was really a fun trip. It gave us a nice taste of Italy, with Malta thrown in to boot!
Though on of the original Seabourn ships, the Legend looked like it had been spruced up recently with exterior/interior painting, furniture updates, etc.
Our cabin (128), was spacious and nicely appointed. The only thing lacking were multiple U.S.-style plugs for our electronic gear. It would be a good idea to bring along a small power strip, or multiple 2-prong adapters.
The room had a Bose CD player/radio, but it did not have auxiliary jack so we could play our iPods through it. Also, the TV could use an upgrade as well.
Overall, we thought the service was excellent. The crew was pretty good at remembering your name, and was always helpful when asked about something. The bartender and server at the Sky Bar were particularly good, as was the waiter we had many times at lunch and dinner.
We think More our cabin stewardess might have been new, so we had a few minor communication problems at first, but overall, she did a good job keeping the room clean, the mini-bar stocked, etc.
The food was good, and the service excellent. We liked eating lunch at the Veranda Restaurant, and also appreciated the fact that they would fire up the grill by the sky Bar, weather permitting, so you could have a nice, casual late lunch or snack if you were on a tour and missed the regular lunch hours.
We ate once in Restaurant 2 (the indoor area of the Veranda restaurant at night). It was surf & turf, that was OK. The problem with "2" is that you had to make reservations 48-hours in advance, as it only seats about 35 people. That's too hard to remember. I think 24-hours would be better.
The did an outdoor barbecue on deck one night, that featured a whole roast pig as the centerpiece. They also were grilling lobster tails, along with small steaks, ribs and fish. It was really a good meal, followed by 60's, 70's and 80's live music and dancing.
We were very satisfied with the entertainment. It is not "Broadway-style", but it provided opportunities to both listen and dance. The cruise director and her assistant, both sang. The other assistant director played both classical and rock guitar. The 5 or 6 person band featured a good lead singer, and played a nice variety of music. There also was a husband/wife duo, with her singing and him playing piano.
We took 2 tours, one to Pompeii while docked in Sorrento, and one while in Malta. Both were excellent and worth the money. The guides were outstanding and knew their topics.
The gym was small, but totally adequate for working out. It had multiple tread mills and bikes, but no elliptical stepper. The spa was also small, but nicely appointed. My wife had a nice massage one day, and had a repair job done on one of her nails. The only shop was small, not open that much, and pretty expensive.
The free laundry is a nice touch, however, the machines did not work very well, and were pretty complicated to try and figure out. Simple, and easy to use would be much better, and allow you to get in and out quickly.
The plumbing system on the board is not the greatest--probably caused by the age of the ship and the technology available at the time it was built. There were at least 3 occasions that things were shut down on multiple decks because of clogs--basically caused by guests putting items other than just toilet paper in the commodes. It is noted all over the place that nothing but TP is to go in the toilets, but I guess people either can't read, or care about their fellow guests. Believe me, it is a 'fragrant" experience walking down the hallways when the crew is trying to clean out those lines!!
The all-inclusive set up, we thought, made it easier to meet people and not have anyone worrying about the tab. The wines served were good, but not great. The liquor was all top shelf. They could use a better beer selection, though.
The people on board were both interesting and friendly. We always asked to be seated with somebody, if available. I estimate the mix was 50% U.S., 40% UK, and a mix of French, German, Israelis.
We really had a great time on this cruise. We will be back probably next year to try one of Seabourn's newer ships.
The list of ports below did not include Trapani, Lipari or Gaeta, all in Italy.
All were small towns that were fine for walking around and shopping. My wife got a great purse at a small shop in Gaeta, at half the price the same thing would have been in Rome--plus no VAT. We did not take tours in these towns, so can't comment on them. Less

Cabin review: A1128
Our cabin (128) was on deck 3, that was one floor up from the eating venues, and had easy access to other areas of the ship. Since the cabin was mid-ship, it was very stable when cruising. It also was quiet. We did not spend the extra money on one of the cabins with the "Juliet" verandas that you could not even sit on. I guess the only advantage of one of those rooms is being able to open the patio doors for some fresh air. The line also needs to ban smoking in all cabins. The set up they have for smoking on the deck is OK, but you still have people complaining about it. Sooner or later I think Seabourn will have to give in and go totally non-smoking. The bed was comfortable, and I liked the curtain that could be drawn to separate the sleeping area from the sitting area. The bathroom was very nice, but not big enough for 2 people to be in it at the same time. Only one sink. There was plenty of storage space and hangers in the walk in closet, and the other drawers and cabinets in the cabin. The robes, slippers and safe were a nice touch. As mentioned in the review be aware of the lack of U.S. outlets and prepare accordingly. The TV and Bose system could use an upgrade. Although our toilet did not back up, the plumbing appears to be an on-going problem on this ship.
