Great Time!

Sail Date: October 2011
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Port Canaveral

We booked the trip for a birthday cruise. We were scheduled to go to the eastern Caribbean but due to Hurricane Rina, the itinerary was changed at the last minute to the western Caribbean. Was pretty disappointed but knew Mexico would be a soggy mess. We ended up having beautiful weather. The food was good in certain areas, like the Pasta Bar and the Chef's Art Steakhouse (do NOT miss this), the Grill and though we didn't try it, the Bar-B-Q on the Lanai looked delicious. Our room steward was perfect. Really. The room was spotless and stayed spotless. He was always there. For the birthday, he made 3 towel animals. We were originally scheduled for the late dinner seating but that didn't work for us so we were immediately moved to the early seating. We also booked an excursion and we were able to cancel it the morning it was scheduled. I know Carnival has a strict policy on this but they were extremely gracious and we received a full refund. It may have been due to the change in More itinerary that they were so flexible. There's a saying that it is much cheaper to keep an old customer than to court a new one. Because Carnival made our trip so pleasurable, we would definitely cruise with them again. We are not professional cruisers and learn something new each time. We bought insurance for the first time on this trip because of so much bad weather. Turns out, you may need it for a medical emergency which happened twice on our cruise. One was airlifted out by the Coast Guard and the second was dropped off in Nassau, Bahamas on an emergency stop. The Captain kept us informed which was appreciated. We didn't attend the shows but played in the arcade and volleyball on the 12th deck which was fun. Less

Cabin review: Carnival Dream Balcony Lido 10217

We had a quiet location near the front of the ship. The room could sleep 3 easily. Our balcony was nice and there was quite a bit of closet space. The water in the shower was always hot. Carnival provides shampoo, body wash, razor, toothpaste and soap. We had no problems with our room at all. A/C blew cold, bed was very comfortable, flat screen TV had ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, TLC and a local Miami Fox station. Pay per view movies were available for $8.99. There is a mini frig with sodas. The room service menu is very limited, especially for breakfast. But since there is always something open 24 hours, like the Pizza Place, you can always get a bite to eat. My husband got the lasagna from the Pasta Bar and loved it. Very generous portion. We never waited in line for more than 10 minutes for anything. Getting on and off the boat was effortless. I don't know if the ship was full. Some may have cancelled due to the hurricane. But don't be afraid of a big boat :-)

Port and Shore Excursions

We didn't book any excursions, just went to the Hilton for a cocktail and headed over to Senor Frogs. We weren't in port very long so it limited our activities.

We cancelled our shore excursion and decided to explore the city alone. We shopped, ate lunch at the Harbor View Restaurant and enjoyed the breathtaking beach. The only complaint we had along with others, is the badgering from the vendors. It happens quite often in the islands and some of our fellow cruise mates didn't even get off the ship because of it. Maybe it's something the governments of these countries should consider. We did like the charm of St. Maarten.
