WE travelled on the Brilliance of the Seas leaving Barcelona on 5th Sept. The cruise had some wonderful ports to visit and this is why we selected this cruise. Embarkation for us was easy and simple as we arrived early at 12.15. There were even cold drinks and cookies waiting for us on the wharf.
The service on the ship was amazing. Staff were always available to answer any questions we may have had and couldn't do enough for us. Our room attendant always had everything clean and ready, he made a point of finding out how our day had been each afternoon and gave us some advice on how to get the most from our cruise. Dining room staff were friendly and efficient and always did that little bit extra. We always looked forward to our nightly dining experience as our waiters were full of fun and had table tricks to show us each day.
There was always a great variety of food at the buffet, our only complaint was the temperature of the food. A microwave centrally located could solve this problem for those of us that like our food hot.
The cost of excursions was high and with a little research you can do your own thing in most ports for half the price. Unfortunately for us many cities were experiencing strikes and protests about the economy so in some ports a ship organised excursion was the only way to go as cabs or public transport were unavailable.
Charges for extras like spa and hairdressing were extremely high and I feel if they lowered their prices more people would use these facilities. The spa staff seemed to be always trying to "drum up business" and were standing idly around. The same goes for the cost of photography, if they lowered the price people would buy more photos and there would be less wastage.
When booking your cruise always allow quite a bit extra for the on board costs of drinks, wine etc. We always made sure we had a drink while we were ashore on our excursions but it would have been nicer to have them on board. On our last cruise with Holland America they had Happy hour (2 for 1) and we would always meet up with friends then.
Overall the ship was spotlessly clean and tidy, service good, and yes the ship is looking a little tired but the wonderful crew make up for anything.
