GIRLS HOLIDAY

Sail Date: September 2011
Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean
Embarkation: Venice

Recently my friends and I enjoyed a cruise around the Mediterranean. The cruise could not be faulted and the ship was lovely. The food was always appealing but could have been more varied on a day to day basis. We did not book any tours through the ship excursion desk but did our own thing on arrival in each port. This proved to save us a lot of money and on arrival in each port there were numerous tour companies offering day tours. We did however book a tour on the internet from Australia with EKOL Travel Ltd for a day tour to Ephesus from Izmir. This was definitely a highlight of our holiday. We were emailed instructions on what would happen after we disembarked from the ship and to our delight Ali was waiting for us with a sign with our name on it. There was only the 4 of us in a 15 seated mini bus which exceptionally clean and the driver and tour guide went out of there way to ensure we enjoyed a happy and memorable day. Ali's english was excellent and he gave us so much knowledge More on the area and on Ephesus itself.

Whilst the atmosphere on the ship was excellent MSC should have a look at their

smoking policy. You can smoke in certain entertainment areas which meant that those areas proved unpleasant for those passengers who do not smoke.

Also I would like to mention that MSC had a laundry special while we were on board for 20 Euros you could have 30 items washed and pressed and for an additional 10 Euros you could have an express laundry done which meant your clothes were returned the same day. All in all we had an excellent cruise. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Again we did our own thing. We caught the local bus across the road from the dock to the old city and walked the wall along the edge of the sea. This was absolutely breath taking and the old city again had long narrow lane ways going off the major square.

Istanbul is a very vibrant city. Again we did our own thing. Outside on the main street were the ship docked we caught the hop on hop off bus. These gave us an tour of the city and an explanation of what there was to see. After disembarking from the bus at the main stop we visited the Blue Mosque and also the underground water storage called the Basilica Cistern but nothing can prepare you for the Grand Bazaar. This exciting network of shops is a shoppers delight and you could easily spend days there exploring each section of it.

As written about we arranged a EKOL Tour before we left Australia and it was excellent. To have your own tour bus and guide was the best experience possible.

When we got off the ship we hired a taxi for a return trip to Olympia. There was a taxi stand where you enquired about the cost etc. For the round trip for 4 adults it cost us 80 EUROS. The driver was a maniac and drove extremely fast and certainly got the message to slow down after we all screamed a couple of times. The ruins themselves were OK but we were glad we had not booked a tour through the ship. The port itself was very clean and had numerous souvenir shops.

We had 3 days in Venice before the cruise which was fantastic. Each day we explored the narrow lane ways and found new and exciting things to see. When the cruise ended we disembarked in Venice and made our way to the airport with the intention of putting our luggage into storage for half the day before our flight that evening, when we arrived we realised that it would take us 1 hour to be served as several ships arrived that day. In hindsight we should have checked our luggage into the storage facility at the dock and caught the ferry back into Venice.
