Nice time, but.....

Sail Date: September 2011
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Barcelona

We have sailed on Norweigian before, but it had been many years back. I received an invitation from the casino company for a "complimentary" cruise. After checking with the cruise line and determining how much it would cost to cruise this ship (taxes & port charges), we decided to make our plans. The personnel I spoke with during this process were all very pleasant and helpful. The ship is huge, but we never really felt crowded, EXCEPT for At Sea days when you tried to find a lounge chair for the day. When a chair was located it was SO close to the one next to it you felt like you were sitting on top of the person next to you. The chairs were nice and reclined flat which we like. The bar service on the pool deck was good and the entertainment was good. The food served on the ship was average. There seemed to be a nice selection of things in the Garden Cafe. We dined at Cagney's Steakhouse (an extra $20 each) and was disappointed in the quality of the meal served there. We could More have basically had the same steak in the main dining room. We attended the Cirque Dreams dinner/show and it was very enjoyable. It was well worth the extra money.

Now for the cabin. It was a nice room, clean, and ready for our occupancy but poorly laid out. The bathroom sink is located IN the living/bedroom area of the cabin. If one of us got out of bed earlier than the other and wanted to brush our teeth we woke the other person up. There was no way to block the sink from the bed. The shower/water closet could be separated by a curtain, but that didn't mask the noise. In our opinion this was a poorly designed cabin for people on vacation. Our cabin steward was very attentive and made sure our needs were met. We did notice the towels given to us for the shower and for the pool were sometimes very frayed. We felt these towels should have been used for something else besides the guest rooms. For the price paid for a cruise it seems the towels presented for use could be better quality.

The casino staff was wonderful. It was a fun place to be and they were very friendly to us. We enjoyed our time there.

Overall we had a nice time, but it was not our favorite ship. Would we sail on it again? I would say that would depend on the price. The quality of things just wasn't quite as good as Holland America, which we have sailed on before. The little attentions to detail didn't seem to be on this ship as we've seen on others. It's not that I would tell you not to try this ship, but just know that it wasn't perfect, but then again, I guess nothing really is! Less

Port and Shore Excursions

We took this post-cruise excursion to the monastery of Montesserat. Beautiful drive up the mountain and a wonderful experience at the top. The only disappointment I had was not hearing the boy's choir. In the description of the excursion it mentioned listening to them, but that was not offered. We then came back to Barcelona and on our own we did the hop on/hop off tour. The Segrada Familia church is a must see.

We took the Pisa/Taste of Tuscany tour. We were a little rushed while in Pisa so we didn't get to look at the little shops or spend as much time as we would have liked in the cathedral there. We then went to a vineyard where wine and olive oil was produced. We toured the place, then sat down to a wonderful wine tasting and Tuscan meal. It was delightful! We weren't rushed and met some very nice people. This part of the tour made up for the rush of the first part. Very enjoyable day!

We took the Mt. Vesuvius/Pompeii excursion. We also visited a cameo factory. Our guide was wonderful and fun. We drove almost to the top of Mt. Vesuvius, then hiked the rest of the way. It is quite steep and not for the faint at heart. When we arrived at the top it was incredible to be standing on top of an active volcano. The view of Naples was beautiful from there. From there we drove down to Pompeii. We were given a little free time to grab lunch and we had an amazing pizza and some good beer! We then walked through the town of Pompeii. It was very interesting and well worth visiting. There is a lot of walking involved so wear good walking shoes!

We decided to take the larger group tour as opposed to the small group tour strictly due to the pricing of the excursion. It was fine being in the larger group. The only thing negative about this day was our tour guide was not easily understood. Since this is such a historical city it would have been nice to really understand all she was saying. The Vatican Museum was nice, but I could have skipped that and spent more time in the Sistine Chapel. St. Peter's Basillica is amazing. This tour was fast paced, but well worth seeing. Here's hoping you get a clearer English speaking guide!
