Carnival Valor, Exotic Western Itinerary

Sail Date: September 2011
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami

We booked a cruise to celebrate my roommate's college graduation. Sailed on the Valor, from Miami, on September 18. Seven-day Exotic Western itinerary, with ports of call in Grand Cayman, Isla Roatan, Belize City and Cozumel.

We had a balcony cabin on deck 8 (#8263). Perfect location, near the forward elevators, with no traffic noise. Met an amazing group of young professionals at our dinner table: Sean, Josh, Maria, Heather, Brad and Allen. Had a great time with them all week long. Definitely upped the fun factor!

All of the entertainment was top-notch. The singers (Nick and Bree) and the dancers were some of the best I've seen and the two production shows were far superior to some of the other Carnival options.

Our room steward was apparently a ninja....he could turn our room over while we were at breakfast. Even though we barely saw him, he always seemed to know right when to come by.

The dining room staff was also friendly and attentive. More Couldn't have asked for much more. There was a guest at the next table who was "difficult" to say the least, so watching the staff deal with her each night was quite entertaining. The only "negative" comment for the entire experience is that only truly HOT meal we had in the Washington Dining Room was the Bacon Mac 'n' Cheese on the final evening (which was incredible). Otherwise the food was just above room temperature.

We had a terrific cruise and would definitely sail on the Valor again. Carnival definitely exceeded Greg's expectations on his first cruise and met mine for my sixth. Thumbs up!! Less

Cabin review: Carnival Valor Balcony Verandah 8263

We had Stateroom 8263, which was adjacent to the elevator bay. I was hesitant at first, concerned about potential noise (i.e., continual foot traffic, people constantly talking, etc). We heard NO noise at all. Perfect location.

Port and Shore Excursions

I would advise to pre-book any excursions prior to arrival. Don't try to find them onshore. There's not much to do in Belize City -- you have to go to another location, by boat, bus or plane to get there. My cabin mate and another friend wound up booking the same Goff's Caye excursion available on the ship (for $20 less per person), but wound up standing on the pier for two hours due to the difference in local time and ship's time. They had an excellent time and saw a pod of dolphins, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and more.

Carnival has a new pier/shopping area in Cozumel called Puerto Maya. Much nicer than Costa Maya. Did the Amazing Race Cozumel excursion in the pouring rain....lots of fun.

Our first port of call was in Grand Cayman. It definitely seemed as if there had been some new development around the port area. We had a snuba excursion booked which took place a short distance from the pier.

This was terrific and a great introduction to a "scuba"-type experience. It was amazing how many schools of brightly-colored tropical fish could be found right offshore. We also saw coral reefs and a sunken ship.

WOW -- what a perfect day at the beach. Mahogany Bay was sooo much fun!! Our package included a clam shell and kayaking. The clam shell just held the heat - I would say skip it. However, the kayaking, water bikes and body boarding took place away from the crowd in a quieter location. Very nice. Pack the sunscreen!
