The NCL Sky is the best!

Sail Date: September 2011
Destination: Bahamas
Embarkation: Miami

My sister and I cruised on the NCL Sky last year (her very first cruise)so decided to go again this year, picking up an extra night this time. We very much liked our room location - 5010 - as it was just around the corner from the main hub of elevators and guest services and just a skip to the Palace Dining Room. It was very easy to find our way around from this central location. We love the Sky - the layout is easy to navigate and the decor is light and airy. Everything was clean, and the service was great.

We sailed only 2 weeks after hurricane Irene hit the East Coast, but were very pleased that we made all our ports of call. Our itinerary had two ports of call switched to accommodate another NCL ship - no problem.

We opted to roll our luggage on ourselves this time. It was so easy! We rolled right to the dining room, sat down and had a wonderful leisurely lunch - by 2:00 our room was ready so we wheeled our luggage inside and were ready to sail! The other More passengers started getting their luggage around 6:00, so either way works great.

We particularly enjoy eating our meals in the dining room - we have yet to try the specialty restaurants - there are so many wonderful choices in the already-paid-for dining room.

We caught two of the evening shows - very entertaining singers and dancers. We attended the White Hot party on deck which was energetic as usual.

The only thing that bummed us at all was on the private island, Great Stirrup Cay. There are renovations going on, which is good, but we decided to treat ourselves to a clam shell cabana for the day since the weather was so very hot. Unfortunately, this did not work out well. All the clam-shells are at the far end of the beach, about 10 rows deep, and right beside the construction. So there was no breeze, no view of the beach, and the constant sound of the machinery. HOWEVER when we asked for a refund, it was given with no questions asked! It would be better if the clam-shells were on the back row stretched all the way across the beach - that would give everyone a view and a breeze. We found a nice shady area on the OTHER end of the beach - if you're facing the beach, head to your left, walk along the paved sidewalk area, and at the end there is another smaller beach with a shady spot. The picnic tables closest to the cookout building are now all under new solid shade large gazebos - I think when the renovations are complete it will be very nice!

OH - I saw one young lady take a large insulated cup to the bar area and ask to have it filled with ice - it was filled without question - so don't hesitate to ask for ice. If you're expecting hot weather, one of those small misting fan sprayers might be helpful. Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Sky 5010

Nice larger porthole view. Room very adequate for two people!

Port and Shore Excursions

I have not been to Freeport since 1986 - the cruise port has changed! You can get off the ship and browse around some shops if you don't want to pay for an excursion. However, we did opt for an excursion - we chose the biking excursion and it was an excellent choice! Anyone who has cruised before knows that a cruise is what you make of it... since the weather cannot be controlled, you just have to be flexible. With that said, I will say that it was HOT that day, but we were each given cold bottles of water and had several stops in the shade and two stops to refill our bottles with more cold water. We were the oldest participants that day (55 and 57 years old) and we made it to the end with no problem and no soreness the next day. This particular excursion includes so much! 13 miles of easy to pedal views, a stop by the Dolphin area, a stop by the beach, lunch (included) at the Gardens, and then back to the beach for over an hour (we even found a geocache there!)Then shopping if you choose, although we opted to head back to the ship. Mario was our guide, a very entertaining and informative young man. If you choose this excursion you will not be disappointed!

We chose the Stingray Encounter at this port - we were taken by boat to Blackbeard's Cay where we were able to walk right into the water and have gentle socialized stingray swim all around. We fed and petted them and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Afterward we got snorkel equipment and swam around, and enjoyed the beach. There are shops there, too, and you can buy lunch and drinks or just wait till you get back to the ship and have lunch there.
