A Wonderful Cruise for First Timers!

Sail Date: September 2011
Destination: Canada & New England
Embarkation: New York (Manhattan)

For first time cruisers, we planned and booked this cruise on our own so we weren't really sure what to expect. The reviews online were mixed, but we were determined to make our first cruise (and our honeymoon!) an amazing adventure! From the moment we stepped aboard Caribbean Princess, we were in heaven. The staff were amazing, everyone was friendly and the ship was SO clean!

We started off our day, before leaving port, by exploring the ship and getting to know our new stomping grounds. We enjoyed some wonderful New York style pizza for lunch on Deck 15 by Neptune Pool, received our luggage and got ourselves unpacked, and then joined the sail away party on Deck 15 at 5PM as we departed New York City. We had wonderful live music to set sail to, everyone was in a great mood, and the weather was absolutely beautiful!

On Sunday, we were at sea all day. We were a little skeptical about our Sea Day, being as we thought we would be completely bored - boy, were we wrong! More The day at sea was one of our best days! It was a really nice, calm, relaxing day! It started early, with an hour long pedicure appointment for me at 8 AM in the absolutely wonderful Lotus Spa. It was completely relaxing sitting in the spa chair, having a lovely pedicure while watching the lovely ocean out the window! The Lotus Spa staff were wonderful; not too chatty, but just enough to make me feel welcome and taken care of. I was also offered some wonderful citrus water, which was absolutely amazing and 100% refreshing! While I was having my pedicure, my husband decided to take some photographs and get a coffee, so he was completely content. It was also nice rising so early, because the ship was nice and quiet - almost serene, since most of the passengers were still sleeping! Also, I've heard that on days at sea, in the early morning around sunrise, if you head to the front of the ship, you can see dolphins swimming alongside! This happened on our day at sea, but unfortunately we didn't get to see them, but some fellow cruise-goers did! That day, we just relaxed and spent some quality time together. We also took part in some wonderful activities on board the ship. Every evening, each cabin receives The Princess Patter, which is a daily newsletter showcasing the events for the next day. It's a wonderful piece of information to keep with you! There's always a TON of stuff going on, starting in the early morning, usually around 6 AM (workouts!) going through until midnight (nightclubs!). There's so much to do, though!

Although we only dined in the main dining room once, for lunch, we were not really impressed. We thought the buffets were WAY better. We found the dining rooms, although we had anytime dining, were a bit stuffy and just not for us. We are more casual people, and did not take part in formal nights. We like to eat whenever we wish and dress however we like. The buffer lets us do this. It was more convenient and, honestly, the food was better! I would recommend to anyone to try the dining room at least once, of course, but we thought the buffets were much better! We also REALLY enjoyed the New York style pizza offered at Prego Pizzeria outside, near the pool (mid-ship). GREAT pizza!

Movies Under the Stars was amazing!! We enjoyed The Adjustment Bureau and The Green Hornet during our 7 night cruise. The other nights were a bit cold and windy, so we only were able to take in two nights of movies. But, it's a wonderful experience and highly recommended! They offer blankets and popcorn! You can also get pizza, hot dogs, burgers...awesome!

The ship itself is absolutely stunning. The piazza is beautiful. The dining areas are beautiful. The Horizon Terrace, at the back of the ship, is absolutely stunning at sunrise and sunset. Gorgeous views and picture opportunities! There are so many lovely parts of the ship!

We had an interior stateroom. Before setting foot on the ship, I was a bit disappointed we had an interior room. I couldn't imagine spending 6 days and 7 nights in a room without windows. Well, to be honest, how much time do you really spend in your stateroom aboard a cruise? Not much. Just to sleep! At first, when we arrived in the interior stateroom, I was a bit claustrophobic, but after a few moments it was fine and I was completely fine throughout the rest of our trip! The room itself was around 163 square feet, which was ample living space for two people. There was definitely enough room! The bathroom was big enough for one at a time, and the shower was a bit small but definitely enough room for a quick shower. In the literature, the bed is stated that it's a queen size, but I think it's actually a king size! It was more than enough for my husband and I! Wonderful! Lots of room! We also had a writing desk, quite large actually! A decent sized television that showed movies, a huge closet, an in-room safe, a full-size mirror. It was great!

The entertainment on the ship was wonderful. We had the opportunity to see the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pipe Band on board our ship in Halifax and Kelli Karl (hypnotist) from Las Vegas! The RCMP Pipe Band were a real treat! Absolutely delightful! Kelli Karl was fabulous. Funny and really talented!

Overall, I don't have anything to complain about on this cruise. We were first time cruise-goers and had an absolutely amazing time. I am not the type of person who relaxes. I was 100% completely relaxed for 7 days on this vacation. This has never happened before! It was wonderful! Thank you Princess!! Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Wednesday was one of our favorites! We anchored in Frenchman's Bay, just outside of Bar Harbor, Maine, United States. A true treasure of the East coast! Should you have a chance to visit this magnificent place, do so! We had an excursion booked for early afternoon, so we had the entire morning free. We had the buffet breakfast aboard the ship in Horizon Court and then journeyed to disembarkation and tendered ashore. Luckily, the Caribbean Princess has it's own tenders so it was SO easy to get ashore! It was about a 10 minute ride in from ship to shore, so not bad at all! It was a bit rainy, so again we had our umbrellas ready! There were beautiful photograph opportunities when we reached shore - lovely flowers, beautiful seascape pictures, and more! A gorgeous seaside town! We headed to the tourist area, to of course do some souvenir shopping! They have some of the best souvenir shops I've seen! Great gifts, at really great prices. We ended up having a spectacular Lobster lunch at Testa's and it was great, and very reasonably priced! Highly recommended!

After lunch, we headed back down to our tour meeting place near port. Our tour was scheduled to leave at 1:30 PM. We had booked the wonderful Acadia National Park and Looking Glass Restaurant Tour by Motor coach. Unfortunately, it was rainy, so we didn't get to see much of Acadia and Cadillac Mountain, but we very much enjoyed The Looking Glass Restaurant! We met some wonderful people from our cruise ship who were from England, and the blueberry pie and coffee were to die for! I highly recommend visiting this lovely, quaint little restaurant on your next visit to Bar Harbor!

On Thursday we docked in Boston. I was a little disappointed that the port we docked at was so far away from downtown. Had we not booked a tour, we would have had to hire a taxi cab to take us into town or walked quite a ways on our own. It was also a very rainy day, as we were getting remnants of Hurricane Lee so it was downpours all morning. Of course, we had booked at 3 hour long, 2 mile Freedom Trail walking tour (which we were very excited about) that morning. From 8:30 AM until 11:30 AM it was straight downpours, but we powered through because we were interested in hearing about the glorious history that Boston has to offer. We were soaked up to our knees and dampened beyond belief! Had it been sunny and dry, we would have enjoyed our walking tour 100%! Our tour guide, Steve, was amazing. Very nice, and very descriptive in the places we visited along the tour. He was wonderful at answering any questions we had along the way. I would highly recommend him! I would also highly recommend this walking tour to anyone interested, however it is quite a long way and very little stop time in between historical monuments and places of interest. Hopefully you won't get rained on if you take this tour! After our tour, it stopped raining, but continued to be cloudy for the remainder of our stay in Boston. We spent an hour or so at Quincy Market and picked up a few souvenirs. It's a wonderful little shopping center, with many, many restaurants of ALL kinds!! Highly recommended! Although we did not enjoy any of their restaurants while in Boston, they looked wonderful! I highly recommend stopping by Quincy Market while in Boston! After Quincy Market, we headed back to the ship and dried off!

On Monday, which happened to be Labor Day in both the United States and Canada, we docked in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Since most shops and restaurants were closed for the holiday, we were happy to have pre-booked a shore excursion! The weather started off cloudy, but luckily it wasn't raining. We booked a 90 minute excursion on the tall ship Mar, which was wonderful! My husband even had the opportunity to raise the main sail, as they asked for volunteers! How exciting! It was a wonderful little jaunt around Halifax harbor and some nice conversations with nice people from all over the world. We also learned some exciting facts about Halifax, and near the end of our 90 minute journey, they set off a small cannon (with newspapers and gunpowder), which was cool! Just as we were pulling back into port on the tall ship, the beautiful sunshine came out and the rest of the morning was beautiful! It warmed up and it was short sleeve weather for sure! We got some nice pictures around the boardwalk and downtown and then did some shopping at the seaport, which was where our ship was at port. The shopping at the Halifax Seaport was amazing - there were so many shops and wonderful gifts! A real gem!

We had an absolutely wonderful time in Newport, Rhode Island. We had beautiful, sunny weather with warm temperatures. Newport is a quaint little town, with lots of shopping, restaurants, and beauty. It truly was a pleasure to visit this seaside gem! We didn't have any excursions planned for Newport, so we took the tender in from the ship and spent a few hours exploring, shopping, and taking pictures. The locals were very nice, the buildings were beautiful, and the harbor was absolutely amazing. Boats everywhere! I wish we had gone on an excursion, because fellow cruise-goers had so many amazing stories about the mansions they visited - as well as the cliff walk! We will definitely take part in some shore excursions next time we are in Newport!

Tuesday was also a dreary day, to start. We docked in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. We didn't have any excursions booked in St. John, so we had planned on just walking around downtown and visiting the St. John City Market. We left the ship around mid-morning, after a nice buffet breakfast, and headed out. It was a bit rainy, so we had our umbrellas in tow. It cleared off, but was cloudy for the remainder of the morning. We walked down to the St. John boardwalk and over to the St. John City Market, which was wonderful. There were a lot of great vendors, including fruits & vegetables, meats, breads & pastries, crafts, antiques, souvenirs, and much more! Since we couldn't bring food back on board the ship, we ended up purchasing a few souvenirs and calling it good. The food looked incredible, though! The St. John City Market is a gem, if you have the time to visit! We ended up getting back on this ship around mid-day for lunch and then spending the afternoon aboard, doing some activities and exploring on our own. Of course, in the late afternoon as we were pulling out of port the sun came out and it was beautiful!
