Wow! What a way to spend our 10th wedding anniversary!

Sail Date: August 2011
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Southampton

How amazing! From the windjammer buffet to Chops Grille, from the IOTS morning TV show to the ice dancing, from the Flowrider and the rock climbing wall to the library, this is such a brilliant ship with something for everyone. The staff are brilliant, the cabin was small but perfect and this was an amazing ship to spend our 10th wedding anniversary on.....

We really enjoyed the choice of food and the buffet decorations. We didn't purchase a drinks package as we are not big drinkers - cocktail of the day was very reasonably priced!

We loved the activities on the ship, thanks to Joff, Steve and all of the cruise director staff. We took part in so much, quizzes, scavenger hunts, the quest game show (what can we say, just don't miss it), singing with the band and the piano man, taking part in the talent show and learning the Michael Jackson thriller dance to perform to about 800 people!!

The service was excellent, no complaints.

Embarkation was so easy More as they let us on the ship at about 11.30am when we weren't sailing until 4.00pm. However, disembarkation was a bit manic in Southampton as the cases are just labelled in huge long rows in the baggage hall; I don't think that this has anything to do with RCI though, so there's probably nothing that they can do. Cabin review: Independence of the Seas Interior Stateroom Deck 8 7697

Good sized inside cabin on deck 7, no noise to report and a very comfortable bed!

Port and Shore Excursions

Lovely little street market here, but mainly a chill out beach stop as we were only docked for half a day. There was a lovely beach about a 5 minute walk from the port.

After a stop at the Toulon market (South of France) on stop 2, it was a trip to Florence and Pisa. We really enjoyed these two stops and went on a RCI organised shore excursion for this one, due to the time and wanting to see both cities in the day. The leaning tower must be seen and Florence is brilliant for all of you art lovers!

We had a three and a half hour rock tour. Ask for the extended tour as you see a bit more. It was reasonably priced and very informative. We just joined up with two other families at the port entrance and got in a taxi there and then. We saw the monkeys (our driver was really experienced and even let us hold one in our arms), the siege tunnels, the 100 ton gun, moorish castle, st michaels cave. We had a quick look in the shops on the way back, but did not get that excited about seeing mainly English shops and got back on the ship!

After a stop in Cadiz - Spain (walking tour was very informative), we spent a full day in Lisbon. We had a panoramic tour of the main sights, followed by a four hour visit to Lisbon Zoo. We would highly recommend this zoo, especially the dolphin show as it was different to other shows that we have seen before.

We pre-booked a full day organised taxi tour with Rudy's touring service from the port and what a great idea. We joined up with two other couples on the ship and enjoyed a very full day seeing all of the main sights in a lovely air conditioned vehicle, a great idea on a hot day! Our guide was fab and the vatican tour (which was included in the price) was excellent.

Vigo was good for shopping. We cannot comment on anything else as we stayed close to the ship this day.
