Grand Princess - Western Med.

Sail Date: July 2011
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Other

The embarkation in Southampton was excellent & we were aboard within 20.mins. of arriving. We did arrive quite early about 12noon.

Great news we had been given complimentary upgrades of cabins. We booked inside & were upgraded to outside with restricted views.Made a huge difference I guess we will be booking outside cabins in future!

The "Stateroom" was great with all you need & Roberto looked after us extremely well throughout the cruise.

All the crew were first class with nothing too much trouble & that wonderful " Can do " attitude.

Food was excellent in every different outlet & service superb. The two speciality restaurants are well worth a visit & the "Porterhouse Steaks" amazing.......Just where do they buy their beef??

The entertainment in the Princess Theatre was very good albeit a little " sameish".

We did our own thing at each destination & managed very well without the need to be getting onto the More tour bus at 7.00a.m.!Shuttle buses were provided to take you from the ship to the port entrance, often quite some distance. It used to included in your fare but now along with many other things is an "extra charge"! If you fancy sitting in the Al Fresco cafe outside the Casino in Monte Carlo three soft drinks & a beer was £27!!

My daughter only drinks soft drinks & the daily charge option for bottomless pop is great value.

Unfortunately on the days at sea we found an inadequate supply of sunbeds. This is only made worse by the selfish brigade who place books etc. onto the beds & the don't use them for hours.I have to say that I was lees than happy to see my wife laying on the deck rather than a comfortable bed.The Deck staff were sympathetic but were unable to help.......It's a common problem apparently??

Whilst we understand the desire of the ship's photographers to capture your every move it can become a little intrusive. At $25 per photo. it's not surprising that they throw away thousands of unwanted pictures at the end of the cruise! Why not reduce the price to a sensible profit level & sell so many more?

All things considered a great holiday cruise. Grand Princess is a beautiful ship but at times very crowded resulting in queues.Cruising today has also become very " commercial" with key focus on extra spend. Many items that were included 15 years ago are now extras. Less

Cabin review: Grand Princess Outside Double Emerald Deck E325

E325 whilst having a restricted view is well placed adjacent to the low part of the lifeboat so the restriction is not much at all. However is quite noisy from ships plant. E516 again restricted view not too bad but you can clearly hear the band from Explorers lounge the deck below.

Port and Shore Excursions

Las Ramblas was fun & worth a visit to see the human statues.

Nice relaxing day on the beach recharging batteries.Quite a pleasant beach in close walking distance from the port.Very pretty Island.

Don't try & take the cable car to the top of the rock!! We waited literally for hours & then gave up & took a minibus taxi.......Much better solution.

Malaga is a Typical Spanish resort. We took the local bus to visit the Dolphin & Sealion show down the coast. The tourist Information girl told us bus 110 approx. 15 mins. The correct bus but 1 hour & 15mins!! Great value bus only 5 Euros each way for all four of us. The show was well worth the visit. We were lucky to arrive just before the main show at 12 noon.....otherwise!! Had to be back onboard by 3.30 so time was very tight.....Don't miss the ship they will sail without you!!??

We paid to see into the casino ( You need your passport) what a let down!! I guess it was mid afternoon but most unimpressive. Fabulous atmosphere of wealth with amazing cars if you are a "Petrol Head" like me! Beautiful gardens & fountains....Well worth a visit.

Naples on a Sunday has very little to offer.Should have gone to Capri or Sorrento.Hydrofoil is expensive & return trips not frequent so be careful!

We took the train from Civitavecchia + local buses.Quite a challenge as we don't speak Italian! We managed to visit St. Peters & Trevi Fountain....Brilliant. Only cost us 9 Euros each for train & bus day pass!!
