Cruising Alaska on RC's Radiance 2011
Our vacation cruise on Royal Caribbean began on July 22, 2011 and continued on shore with a 7 day add on package. Radiance of the Seas has been totally rehab'ed, so everything looked new and beautiful. Our Junior Suite with balcony was definitely the way to go.
The accommodations and activities, though are not without fault. The in-room coffee pot was a disaster--very messy. Royal Caribbean's wine packages are a total rip off--price is exorbitant and quality is barely mediocre. I bought the (top-priced) platinum package and was truly disappointed--RC priced each bottle at more than $40.00 for wine that might average $12.00 in the grocery store.
Food in the Windjammer seems to be getting worse--would only rate quality at a C. RC's rehab of the ship included the establishment of five or six new restaurants that had cover charges ranging from $3 to $30 per person (!!!)--above and beyond the cost of dining. Space for these restaurants was, at least in part, taken from the More Windjammer--such that it frequently became difficult to find a seat the free dining facility.
A "naturalist" that was hired by RC to give on-board lectures on the wildlife and geology that is Alaska--turned out to have his degrees in business and knew very little about his topics. We had hoped the captain would let us know when whales were spotted from the ship--many guests saw orcas--but we must not have been on the correct side of the ship when they were frolicking for some time within sight.
Two great excursions were booked outside the RC offerings: a trip with Carlin Air/Ketchikan to see the bears at Anan Creek was absolutely worth the cost; and a whale watching trip with Captain Dan out of Ice Point Straits was spectacular. The land portion of our vacation was mostly wonderful--with the exception of a much overpriced airboat tour/Talkeetna. Less
