FABULOUS CRUISE - WONDERFUL COPENHAGEN & SO MUCH MORE

Sail Date: July 2011
Destination: Baltic & Northern Europe
Embarkation: Southampton

We have just returned after a fantastic cruise to the Baltic 16-30th July 2011.

The entire trip was so very enjoyable and even the few days at sea were enjoyable with so much to do in this magnificent cruise liner.

Our stateroom was on the 6th deck and our 2 stewards were so efficient and friendly. They were quick to clean our stateroom every morning when we went for breakfast and always had a friendly chat and often a laugh or two when we

saw them on the hallway. Room service was excellent - we had breakfast in our stateroom most days when we were in port as often we could disembark quite early so this saved a lot of time.

Evening meals were taken in the magnificent Moonlight Sonata Restaurant and I have to say that the food was of the very highest quality, served by friendly and helpful waiters and sommeliers. Glad to see healthy options available if required and even these meals were delicious. One small criticism, we had requested to be placed More on a table for 6 people but for some reason we were sat on our own table for 2, as indeed were the people on the next table (they had also requested a table for 6).

Cafe style meals were available in the Ocean View Cafe on the 14th deck. These were good quality but you had to choose your time to visit as obviously it got really, really busy at peak times.

Excursions -we chose not to take all Celebrity organised excursions because some stops were within walking distance of the cities eg Warnemunde (main excursion to Berlin but this was a very long and tiring trip) we took advice from reviews written by other cruisers from previous trips and took the local train in to Rostock and had a very enjoyable day. Brugges,Warnemunde, Helsinki, Copenhagen,Tallinn and Stockholm were easily accessed via the shuttle buses organised by Celebrity Cruises at a reasonable cost (8 -10 dollars return). The shuttle buses were frequent and we were always told clearly what time we needed to be back on board. In St Petersburg we took 2 excursions each of the 2 days we were in port, simply because we would have had to purchase our own visas at 100 dollars each if we wanted to explore alone. The customs clearance we had to go through every time we left and returned to the cruise liner was a bit tedious but we all had to do it. Once on the quay the Celebrity staff were waiting to welcome all back with ice cold water and cold towels - a very nice touch as it was very warm during most of the stops.

All in all a very enjoyable holiday. We have travelled with Cunard 7 times over the past 3 years and I have to say we both considered the meals and quality of service to be just as good on Celebrity, if not better. Less

Cabin review: Celebrity Eclipse Deluxe Ocean View W/Veranda Continental Deck (6) 6288

Very nice touches in our stateroom - well planned accommodation with a glass fronted veranda and a beautiful and well equipped bathroom. Plenty of storage space. Tea and coffee making facilities a good idea - saved trips to the cafe for drinks. Supplies of coffee, tea and milk replenished twice daily. The hallway did sometimes get quite noisy but there were quite a few children on board and some of them delighted in running up and down the halls laughing and screaming, but they must have been 'letting off steam' and it never got too bad to complain about it. Only a couple of minor points - it would have been a lovely touch to have shower creme including in the bathroom whilst the tea/coffee facilities were useful, the tray tended to be in the way and we found ourselves moving it around the stateroom so we could use the space where it belonged for other things eg hair drying, make-up, writing etc

Port and Shore Excursions

Very speedy docking and clearance to begin disembarkation Went on a city tour excursion with an excellent tour guide and plenty of time to explore alone after the official tour. Small problem when we returned to the ship as there was quite a backlog of coaches and it did take an hour to get back on board. Some other guests were sat on their coaches for quite a bit longer. Crew explained that they could only use one gangway instead of the usual two.

again shuttle buses to take us to the heart of the city. Another beautiful place steeped in history and culture. Once we had explored we took a city tour bus then selected what we wanted to re-visit later in the day. Enjoyable day and time to explore shops and sites at the port before we left for home late at night.

we again got very quick clearance to go ashore. Took the shuttle bus in to Helsinki but walked off in the wrong direction from the city centre and saw quite a lot of Helsinki before we found the centre. Very funny really. Expensive here for drinks and food, but an enjoyable day.

excellent - warnemunde really beautiful and well worth visiting. Took local train to Rostock for a few hours and spent the rest of the day (we did not set sail until midnight to accommodate the return of the brave souls who had taken excursions in to Berlin) When we sailed the port authorities played music - Time to Say Goodbye and We are sailing. Very nice touch!!

Spent 2 days here - highlight of the tour for us and many of our travelling companions. We selected 4 half day excursions and this meant the tedium of having to present passports and excursion tickets at customs every time we left and returned to the ship. The customs officials were obviously quite powerful and showed no personality whatsoever. On our 3rd excursion we were allowed some free time to explore the main shopping centre and this felt quite an honour and we all felt a bit naughty as if we should not have been allowed our freedom for an hour. St Petersburg is a magnificent city and memories will stay with us for a very long time.

quick and punctual docking and disembarkation process. Again we took the shuttle bus in to the centre. Very beautiful but expensive city with fabulous parks, buildings and shops etc. Queue of shuttle buses waiting to take us back to the cruise ship

quick clearance again. We elected to walk in to town but there were city tour buses waiting on the dockside so we took a city tour before exploring for the rest of the day on our own before returning to the ship on the city tour bus again. Very, very enjoyable stay in a beautiful city, well worth a visit. There was also a craft market set up on the dock and we all spent time (and money) enjoying this market.
