Celebrity Eclipse - Baltics

Sail Date: July 2011
Destination: Baltic & Northern Europe
Embarkation: Southampton

We have just returned from the gorgeous Baltic on our first trip there with Celebrity Eclipse. This is our second Celebrity cruise and we thought that we would try Aqua class for a change as the Persian garden sounded lovely and we really wanted to try Blu for a meal.

The room was lovely if a little small( by Cunard standards at least ) by the end of the two weeks and I had taken far too many dresses to fit in to the very awkward sliding door wardrobe but the noise was terrible. Each evening we went to bed after a little dance or nice meal and dropped off to sleep beautifully only to be woken up at 4am with great regularity by loud bangs and a scraping noise overhead and this would go on for the rest of our time in bed and it was impossible to get any more sleep without ear plugs so do please be warned if you book this class. Our cabin was no.1543 and as it was on the corner it appeared to be one of the worst for noise but other guests on the same floor told us that they had More suffered too an despite Celebrity listening to our complaints very seriously nothing ever changed for the whole two weeks.

The Blu restaurant was lovely , great fun and Vladimir the manager was such a sweetie , nothing was too much trouble for him. we tried the Tuscan Grill twice and loved it particularly when we got a window seat, what a view and Qsine was fun but only do it if you have a fun crowd to go with , it is not the place for a romantic meal for two.

The dancing on Eclipse was very disappointing as everything was very Latin based and starting times were very late, 11 pm on a formal night is a rather silly time to start the dancing in our opinion particularly when you have a 7am start on the Russian excursions! The 700 Mexicans on the ship however seemed to love it and went to bed at 4 am and then got up at 4pm so perhaps they had the right idea! One group was 300 strong and did tend to overwhelm the pool area at times.

Afternoon tea is a real must as the scones are delicious and in fact the food is exceptionally good on Celebrity and the cooking events are really worth going to as are the dance classes . Less

Cabin review: Celebrity Eclipse 1543

1543 noisy ,noisy avoid at all costs, the balcony area is sunny however(lots on aqua are not because of the overhang)

Port and Shore Excursions

Beautiful Brugge, we loved it even though it rained .It was easy to get there too, we did not take the Celebrity excursion as we though it would be much cheaper and faster by ourselves and it really was. We walked to the station at Zeebrugge which took about 20 minutes and was an easy walk then picked up the train to Brugge which cost us 7 euros for a return for two and we were in town by 10 am. It was Sunday so it was quite peaceful but lots of shops and cafes were open . As we only had till 3pm ( a rather sad and silly time to leave we thought ) we only had time for a lunch and a museum before we had to return by train and would have loved to have been able to stay much longer.

A beautiful city with wonderful boat tours but get there early again before the crowds, It is easy to walk into town and so much to see on the way such as the little mermaid and the royal palace. have a coffee in Nyhavn , a bit expensive but worth it for the people watching and stroll around this lovely city. Tivoli gardens was a little busy but OK for kids , not a lot to do for peace seeking adults. we found a brilliant restaurant for dinner as the ship was docked till 12 and it si called Celeste just off the main street of Nyhavn, fantastic fresh fish all set in a little courtyard in the back with a huge fire pit and lovely blankets to keep you warm, friendly staff who speak wonderful English too.

one of my favourite stops, a superb city to walk around with very friendly people who all wanted to help us find the right spots. we strolled off the ship and into town and took a taxi back for 14 euros so though that we had a bargain. Took the ferry again to Sumenlina Fortress and enjoyed the lovely sunshine there amongst the locals. shopping was good in Helsinki, the market is fantastic and try the lovely Karl fazer chocolates for a real treat, there's whole Karl fazer shop in the centre.

We took the train to Rostock and had a great time, excellent shopping and a lovely town to walk around. Found a brilliant pub called Zur Kogge down by the river for lunch, lots of great fresh fish in a real sailor haunt with very reasonable prices and friendly staff, well worth a visit. Karls at warnemunde was lovely for a last coffee or some fresh strawberries and it had some really sweet gifts to buy which were not too tacky!

an easy walk to the ferry boat and we weer in the Vassa by 9.30 before all the tours arrived, heaven. The ferries are very efficient and cheap and you soon can work out where to get off but the Vassa is the best to start with, a superb attraction and with a great coffee shop too. Gamla Sam old town was lovely to walk around and we watched the changing of the guard as well and really just soaked up the atmosphere in lovely Stockholm.
