First time is the best (?)

Sail Date: July 2011
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Galveston

This is our first cruise for us with Carnival and was awesome. The Western Caribbean is excellent!

Embark - painless. Do yourself a favor and park at Lighthouse Parking. It is secure and the people are hard working. Going through the rat line took about 45 minutes and once we were at the counter, there were no snags. If you are travelling with more that 4 people and want to sit together in the dining room - look at your sail and sign card right then and make sure you all have the same number.

Room - room was great - had a balcony room on the 8th level. Spectacular. Housekeeping (Art) was great (other have said it but it helps to tip early!) The kids (16 and 19) had their own room and ate room service about x5 times a day. We had coffee each morning on the balcony - it was beautiful.

Spa and Gym - The wife did the spa a couple of times and loved it. We played basketball and worked out some - but the work out area is not huge - but it was all we needed. More

Photography - It may seem cheesey - but let them take as many pictures of you that you want. You will be surprised how nice (but expensive) they are - but we had one shot of the family as we came of the boat in Jamaica that is priceless.

Entertainment - The comedy was good but trust me, get there early. The magic show was OK. Karaoke was fun and the daughter sang several songs and made me proud as everyone was impressed with her voice. The musicals were weak.

Dining Rooms - We had early seating and our head waiter (Anold), waiter Christian and the drink steward (Peter) were awesome. The only snafu was they could not accomodate us at a 6-top so we were split in a booth and an adjacent two-seat. We did that twice and had them accomodate all of us at the booth. Mr. V the Maitre d came by several times to make sure we were OK. The dining room shows will crack you up. Wonderful service from everyone.

We also had a birthday dinner at the Steakhouse and we all fell in love with OLGA. Not only is she beautiful, she is an incredible waiter. The food was spectacular and the Ceasar salad was the best I have ever had.

The melting chocolate cake is unbelievable.

Casino - I am now hooked on 3 card poker. We played many times and came away about $120 ahead (of course we were $300 down at one point and $600 over). The dealers are good with some better than others.

The big screen on the deck only worked one night. THat was a disappointment.

Can't wait to do it again. Less

Cabin review: Carnival Conquest Balcony Verandah 8301

Had 8301, 8305 and 8309. All were great location and with the exception of the family across the hall allowing their 18 year olds to drink to excess in Jamaica and Grand Cayman (so they made an ass of themselves by fighting, arguing and throwing up all over the place), the rooms were great. Great storage and about half-way down the hall from the fore and mid elevators. Great access to Lido.

Port and Shore Excursions

We took at taxi to Playa Mia and spent the day handing over money. The water was nice and it was crowded and at times, fun. But I think the whole Cozumel thing is a little over-rated for me.

We booked the Coral Garden and Stingray Sandbar through Carnival and it was the highlight of the tour. The group that took us out were spectacular. The whole event was tremendous. You cannot imagine the number of stingrays that are there and how docile they are. We held them and they are soft, rubbery and silk-like - nothing like I thought. Snorkeling at the coarl reef was stunning. Fish EVERYWHERE. I loved it and cant wait to go again.

We did not use Carnival to book an excursion for Jamaica. Do your self a favor and contact Carolyn Barrett at Barrett Adventures. She was recommended by a friend who had taken this tour previously. We asked for something off the beaten path and something that a all of us could do (due to the wide age difference). Man did she deliver. Shawn (our driver) is spectacular and if you decide to go this route, see if you can get Shawn. We had the van to ourselves. We drove about 1.5 hours through the mountains and went to YZ falls - it is beautiful and out in the middle of nowhere. We rope swung and jumped off the falls and swam in a natural pool. It was refreshing and beautiful. They took us to lunch at a place that was a restaurant by the sea and we were the only epeople there. IT WAS THE BEST MEAL OF THE TRIP!!!! I do not know the name of the place but they served us fried chicken, marinated pork stew, balck beans and rice and cole slaw-type thing. BY FAR, THIS WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE JAMAICA EXPERIENCE FOR ME. These people had very little but set up out table with the best they had and went out of their way to make us comfortable. The server was about 16 and so sweet and tried so hard to serve us "western" style. I will never forget that expereince (although I forgot the name). After that, we toured the Black River. It was a neat experience and went into a mangrove area that was beautiful. Jamaica was really great. I highly recommend getting off the beaten path if you can - there are certain risks associated with that, though. The small towns you go through can break your heart because of the poverty level. TRUST ME - ASK FOR SHAWN.
