Panama Canal cruise...amazing

Sail Date: April 2011
Destination: Panama Canal & Central America
Embarkation: Miami

First time we've cruised with another couple...much better than cruising with just my husband. The ship was clean and sparkling as was the crew. Such friendly people..staff mostly from the Phillipines and Goa. Polite unobtrusive,caring,attentive..best crew we've had so far. It was 'Freestyle sailing"...eat when and where you like. We like this idea.

Used the trivia game schedule several times a day to reconnect with each other. We'd arrange to 'meet at trivia'...gave our day some structure. On board entertainment was soso...Interesting trip ashore to Cartaghena, Colombia. Don't like being forced to go to the sales outlets selected by the tour guides....didn't buy anything at any of those places.

Spent all day sailing through the Panama Canal. Had a guide on board that spoke for almost the whole journey, describing the history of the canal, its impact on trade, what was happening as we went through the locks etc....very informative. . We moved around to different More locations on the ship to get the best vantage points. Was amazed at the skyline of Panama City...lots of very tall buildings..none more than 10 years old.

Visited Puentarenas in Costa Rica (didn't go on organized tour). Took a local bus around the small town.marimba player on board and a beautiful English speaking guide.Really saw local culture.

Stopped at Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala...took offered bus tour to Colonial town of Antigua.....local guide walked us around the town for $10.00 each...of course took us to see the Inca ladies selling clothes and other artifacts. He was anxious and impatient and wanted to finish the tour once we'd seen the sellers. Felt we were ripped off. It is a lovely town...well worth the visit...many of the decorations used during Holy week were still hanging from some of the buildings.

Next stop Huatalco in Mexico...small little town on the beach...we just wandered around looking at the merchandise.

Acapulco was amazing...several ships in port. took a tour of the city with local guide....busy city, drove behind a small truck that had a young military guy, face covered up, in back facing us with gun at the ready.....reminded us of the drug problems in that country. Spent about an hour out watching the cliff divers..had to really jockey for space to get a good look at these daring kids...don't know who pays them to dive...they were at the top of the steps as we left and we gave them a few dollars....they really are young kids!

Cabo was our next stop. Arrived early in the morning and went ashore by tender. We loved that place ;there were 4 cruise boats in at the same time.Took a boat tour out to see the 'arch', then we wandered along the beachfront, stopped in to look at a few shops, had a great Margarita and some snack food and then went paragliding....All this before 11 am. I loved soaring in the blue sky...not a bit scared. My husband went on a sail on one of the America's Cup boats. For a man who sails on The Chesapeake Bay,he was disappointed he didn't get to do more than winch in a sail (for the photograph). Back on the ship for the 3pm departure and our final sail into Los Angeles.Picked up a shuttle to take us to LAX....no problem. Would I do it again...sure! Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Pearl 4578

Small cabin with porthole. Sufficient for our needs. Clean bathroom.Enough storage space. Was able to watch TV from bed.....awake at 5 am to watch the Royal Wedding. Did'nt see our cabin crew very often . didn't need them, and tips were included in our overall cruise cost. Cabin was on deck 4 where most of the disembarkations were from. Didn't bother us at all...in fact like all the 'activity' in the area.
